The Cabinet yesterday decided to allocate Rs.1200 million from the treasury to the Plantation Industries Ministry to make the daily additional payment of Rs.50 to estate workers as demanded by estate workers' trade unions.

The government has now decided to absorb the additional cost that would be incurred in making this payment instead of burdening the plantation companies.

With the payment of Rs.50, an estate worker will receive Rs.1500 as their monthly pay. (Kelum Bandara)
