President Maithripala Sirisena has signed the Gazette notification declaring railways as an essential service, Secretary to the President Austin Fernando said.
The decision has been taken following the trade union action, launched by several trade unions of the railway department, since yesterday.

appoint SF to the post appoint siripala to women affairs ministry. Get retired engine drivers to drive trains, let the fellows to go on strike. The wives of theses strikers will chase them for work in no time when they realized that the job of their husbands are at stake. Do what JR did at on time.Teach them a lesson for life time.

why can't they declare everything as an essential service like "parliamentarians to serve people"

Good move. But I see this as an act of discrimination because when the GMOA struck there was no action to have medical service as an essential service. To teach everyone a lesson the gazette should have included arrest of the union leaders in the event members refuse to follow orders. Tough action is necessary to contain these.

Everybody is trying to show his two penny worth, at the expense of the poor commuter who keep this country and machinery running. If the poor worker does not work, there will be no department, no country and no pride to boast. But he is at the receiving end. When the president of Poland Lech Valensa lost the election, to took his tool kit and went back to work at his former job. Let our failed politicians take lesson from Poland.

Declare it an essential service permanently and get new recruits to certify their consent. Otherwise, these guys will consider "Good governance" as a joke.
