With the derailment of Kandy- Colombo express train, the number of train derailments this year has reached 45.
The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union (SLSMU) said the express train between Colombo and Kandy derailed between Peradeniya and Pilimatalawa railway stations this morning.
They said the train derailed at 4.47 am, following that, the train service on that particular line was disrupted.
Some wheels of the last compartment of the Kandy-Colombo train were off the track.
As a result, trains scheduled between Badulla and Colombo have also been delayed. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

This sudden increase of derailments should be thoroughly investigated by engineers in the railway department. It is possible that these are deliberate acts of sabotage by some unknown persons with a hidden agenda.

The derailment of the trains even on the coastal line is frequently occurring. Due to the poor maintenance. Besides the railway track which is located by the side of the beach is so corroded certain wooden sleepers are to be perished. Thus certain places of the track are covered with the weeds. Therefore the dilapidated track should be repaired and either concrete or new wooden sleepers should be replaced in order to prevent continuous derailments. It is very common now that the trains are not arriving at the stations on time

Please hand over running of our railways to Indian railways. We are a lazy lot not willing to rise up and do well.

Japan's Shinkansen line linking Tokyo and Osaka, inaugurated in 1963 took more than 45 years to experience its first derailment, and that, too, was due to an earthquake. Now our railway department has come closer to this enviable record by having no less than 45 derailments this year alone. These figures speak so much for how these two countries are managed.

Is this related to the repair and running of old trsin carts, or heavy engines imported from our neighbour or lack of maintenance of tracks or sabotage by some organised groups, or what? There must be some reason for these mishaps.
