A proposal to provide interest-free loans for private university education will be submitted to the Cabinet next week, acting Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

While addressing a meeting in Ruwanwella he said the proposal on the interest-free loan to be granted annually to five thousand students who have failed to gain the opportunity to enter government universities despite passing the advanced level examination, will be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

An interest-free loan amounting to Rs.900,000 will be available for studies under this loan scheme.

An amount of Rs.300,000 will also available for daily expenses. After the completion of studies, another two years will be available to repay this loan without interest. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

    Good proposal

Good move. Australia has a Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) and the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). HECS-HELP loans are interest free. It is subject to indexation which means as everything else changes in value, the HECS-HELP changes too, so that it stays in line with changes in the cost of living (inflation).

The State should always play a lead role in university education as otherwise private universities will lower standards for profit making

I am not sure about Interest-Free. But already this scheme is available for private university students to follow UGC-approved causes in the private universities.

    Thank you, Ranil.

First step to privatisation of state universities.

Utilize the facility for a good cause! Saturday, 27 May 2023 04:58 PM

Do you have any reservation on this? Students like the IUSF leaders will have no chance to stay in the campus enjoying public funds! This time, they will be asked to repay.

In America the world’s number one university, Harvard , is a private university but the worst universities in the country are also private universities. Unlike America, third world countries are not equipped to maintain private universities, even one or two, at high level. In the third world sooner or later the standards in private universities have to come down in order to survive and that would have very negative impact on the country as a whole. The only solution for the third world countries is to build more state universities and completely shutdown all private universities by legislation.

Too many fools think Australian systems are good Saturday, 27 May 2023 03:10 PM

A lot of overseas public education systems, with loans are absolutely hated by students here. My relatives in Australia despise the loan system, which applies to Government/public universities. We don't need stupid ideas like that here.

You should charge nominal interest else no value they will treat this as a grant which is common in our country .

Student loans that need to be repaid once they start work. That’s how it’s done in rich countries. No free rides at tax payer cost to strike and aragalaya.

This should be given to state university students as well. Most have numerous financial hardship. All should be given loans which they have to repay after they qualify. There should be a monetary and service bond so that they have to serve the country for minimal number of years and repay the loan before they can leave the country. this is the practice in all developed countries. No one gets free higher education.

This is bound to come under strong protest from IUSF. @ Academic USA. You nuts? Have you experienced the quality of our local uni produce? They will only fit in well in loss making state institutions. Your proposal should be the other way round!

This should be done to all public and private sector students ..many poor in public universities too suffer ? Why not they have ? Ask them to pay back in installments of 20 years

    Great Move

Smart students but dumb system Sunday, 28 May 2023 08:58 AM

Siromi Gunaratne! Your suggestion is the best. This will serve as an incentive to students to finish their studies and usefully employed. They save their time and public funds. Their life will have a purpose instead of getting a bath, or Tear Gas treatment or assaulted by law enforcing Police. University students are intelligent, but the system spoil them.

The user pay system must apply for every vocation. The public seeking information from government office staff must be facilitated quickly and efficiently without harassment and bribes. Extra fee may be levied for speedy result.
