Sri Lanka to be awarded US $ 200,000 for fifth place finish in World Test Championship

Sri Lanka will receive US $ 200,000 in prize money for finishing fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC), the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.

Sri Lanka were in the running to qualify for the final heading into their last WTC series, away to New Zealand.

But a 2-0 series defeat meant that they missed out on the final and fell down the points table to finish in fifth.

The ICC announced an overall prize pool of US $ 3.8 million, for the nine teams that participated in the 2021-23 cycle of the WTC, with the winners and the runners-up receiving US $ 2.4 million of the entire pot.

The final of the 2021-2023 WTC, between Australia and India, will begin on June 7 at The Oval in London.

The winning team will receive US $ 1.6 million, while the runners-up get US $ 800,000.

South Africa, who finished third, will receive US $ 450,000 while fourth-placed England get US $ 350,000.

The remaining four teams will split the remaining US $ 400,000 equally.

The first reaction of many is....'oh another gift from heaven for the chiefs to indulge'. But for the sake of the country and it's long suffering people, whatever we end up getting should be distributed among island's schools for sports development, not just cricket. How many talented boys and girls must be there waiting to be discovered and fine tuned?

@ Cherath; That is what they don’t do even cricket development with better facilities in outstations. But, they want to swell their savings, as they announced recently. Best wishes for the team in the next championship. They can do well if they don’t throw away the wickets by playing at bouncers when the trap is laid like in New Zealand, recently.

SL would have got a higher rank if not threw away the wickets, at will, at least by drawing the series. Johnson injured and Trent Boult also skipped the series, too to make it easy. Very pathetic, indeed.

Considering the value of the US $ 200,000 to the Sri Lankan Rupee it is big money by Sri Lankan standards these days. They say something is better than nothing after failing to qualify and having to come through the back door once again
