Past pupils of Devi Balika Vidyalaya are up in arms against the Cabinet paper under which they alleged seeks to relocate the classes of the advanced level science and maths streams to a place in Udahamulla.
Past pupils of the school had formed a group named ‘Devi Balika Vidyalaya Surekeme Sanvidanaya.'
Secretary of the group Nilochana Shrimali said in a press release that well-known businessman Dhammika Perera had offered Rs. 100 million to develop the school but a cabinet paper has been submitted by the Minister of Education to relocate the science and maths streams to Udahamulla Wijayarama School. “We are of the opinion that development of the stream should be done within Devi Balika itself in Sri Jayewardenepura. It is always possible to construct a multi-storey building and increase classroom facilities for the science and maths streams,” Nilochana said in the press release.
However, a joint release from the principal and the management board of the school said only an additional science and maths stream will be set up in Udahamulla. “An additional Maths and science stream will be located at Udahamulla as there is no room in Devi Balika to accommodate a large number of students who have applied for the science and maths streams. “There are 2,500 students in the advanced level streams while an additional 200 students have applied for the science and maths streams after competing their ordinary level exam. The decision to set up an additional maths and science stream was made with the full consent of the academic staff and the Development Board of the schools,” the release said. (Yohan Perera)

This is an attempt by Dhammika Perera to grab the Colombo 8 land by relocating the entire school to Udahamulla in the long term.

I guess the country is having enough and enough issues to tackle with. Even pupils are teach, guide and mold online. "School-loyalty" is something obsolete.

As old girls, we are with ‘Devi Balika Vidyalaya Surekeme Sanvidanaya'. We don't need to take over another school to expand our school. Let's do vertical development and accommodate more students.

They must put Nation First and not think about their petty self interests.

What is this sudden need to accommodate more into Devi. It has always admitted girls with highest caliber just like other leading schools in the country. If making donations to help the education of children is their utmost wish there are enough poor schools all over the country with are run even without basic facilities. Those schools are maintained due to the sacrifices of noteworthy teachers and communities. Go help those schools. Those children could really benefit from Rs. 100 mn. Why fight to make this "donation" to a school in Colombo? And why close down a school that's more than 10 km away? Why close any school at all? They can develop the school in Nugegoda and can accommodate more students and grades. Want to develop Science education? Donate to university research facilities. Finance university research programs. Open a scholarship program to help students who excel at education to have access to opportunities. They are not fooling anyone with these tactics.
