Over 25,000 suspects have been arrested for various crimes including for the possession of narcotics, firearms and explosives by the police during island-wide raids conducted from June 6 to June 20 midnight, police said.
Accordingly, police said a total of 25,912 suspects were arrested during the crime prevention raids.
They said a total of 6,420 suspects were arrested with 5.5 kgs of heroin, 217 kg of cannabis and 758 grams of Ice drugs while 52 suspects have been arrested over possession of weapons and firearms. A pistol, 18 12-bore firearms, 18 repeaters, 36 locally made weapons and 3 swords were also seized along with the suspects.
Police said 6 suspects were arrested over possession of 367g of explosives, 23 detonators and 7 hand grenades.
Over 179,000 litres of illicit liquor were taken into custody along with 5,574 suspects during the period.
A total of 5,110 suspects who were issued arrest warrants and 8,750 other suspects were also among the arrested.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
