The pre-scheduled massive trade union action with protest march will be held in Colombo today, Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

He told the Daily Mirror that the protest demonstration would commence opposite the Fort Railways Station and proceed to the Presidential Secretariat.

"Today we have recorded the eleventh day of refraining from online teaching. We can't trust that a proposal would be submitted at the next cabinet meeting by the Education Minister to resolve the current issue of salary anomalies for teachers," he said.

He said the same cabinet proposal was made in January 2020 but there was no further progress. Therefore, there is no credible assurance over this cabinet paper," he said.

We held a discussion with the Education Minister on Tuesday (July 20), but it ended in a stalemate.

"We will be launching the strike with strict adherence to health guidelines, maintaining physical distancing and hoping to bring a significant number of teachers from all over the country," Mr Stalin added.( Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
