When married women leave their families and travel thousands of miles to work in another country, they suddenly feel the magical “freedom” which once they had but lost to when they got married. So, this leads to sexual temptations resulting in clandestine affairs with even total strangers. Some of these women enjoying the thrills of illicit sex are not willing to return soon to their families in Sri Lanka. This must have been the basis for the desperate action by the poor husband.

Although death threats on a 5 year old child is a serious offense and should not be tolerated, it would still be interesting to hear what the man's story is. I suspect he wanted to get the wife down to kill her, not the child.

Recently family protective laws which prevented women who had children under 5 years old from taking up domestic employment overseas was removed. This is harmful for sri lankan families and future generations of children. Re-institute enforcement of the laws. Mothers should not be forced to go overseas in to domestic servitude leaving toddlers and young children behind. A more appropriate cut off age would be 7 years old.

Even if the mother came back, she must seek to get the child away from the wicked father. Government is of course responsible for their allowing mothers with young children to travel abroad. Sri Lanka can't continue to defile our society for the sake of our government foreign exchange craving. No sri lankan overseas would send more than the absolute minimum necessary to sustain family either, while the dollar rate is pegged artificially low by our terrible Central Bank. Black market is over 500 rupees a single US dollar already.
