There is a sharp decrease in COVID-19 cases being reported daily and also the number of hospitalization has also vastly gone down, Health officials pointed out today.

According to Senior Consultant Physician at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, the recent travel restrictions and preventive measures had contributed to the drop.

“It is imperative to maintain the momentum in the future too,” he said.

Dr. Wijewickrama also stressed the importance of getting immunized in order to reduce the number of deaths, without being carried away by false reports on vaccination.

The number daily COVID cases which was around 2,500 reduced to 1,986 yesterday (18). It is after 50 days that the number of cases was reported below 2,000.

Also, the number of COVID deaths is also declining at present, which becomes evident with the number of deaths reported yesterday which is 84.

Meanwhile, Prof. Neelika Malavige from the Department of Immunology and Molecular Sciences of the Sri Jayawardenapura University said there is no specific difference between the COVID-19 variant in Sri Lanka and other countries as of now.

“However, whatever the new variants that would come in future, the vaccines provide protection against all of the new variants,” she underlined.

The experts expressed these views in a special live TV programme organised by the Media Ministry. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Sri Lanka is a country that highly depends on tourism, so at least now stop publicising the number of cases and the deaths. When the population increases number of deaths will also increase which no one can stop.

    Selvakumar Sunday, 19 September 2021 07:16 PM

Population increases can't be dependent on the deaths for this corona causes!!!

Sam Silva Sunday, 19 September 2021 07:26 PM

You mean to say the country should hide the facts from the people who are living for the sake of the tourists. You have baseless assumptions.

    Bernard Sunday, 19 September 2021 06:41 PM

Everybody has to realize that travel restrictions/lockdowns and opening the country for the sake of economy are diametrically opposing measures. Had the economy been opened disregarding health issues, the country would have seen a catastrophy by now.

    Selvakumar Sunday, 19 September 2021 07:24 PM

Still haven't get freedom with corona!!!

Sachi Kuhananthan, MD Sunday, 19 September 2021 08:04 PM

I predicted this 2 months ago. The pandemic is over. This is from natural immunity and has nothing to do with vaccines. Natural immunity is long lasting and there will not be another wave. The government should get rid of the lockdowns and open the country without any restrictions

Godayata Magic Sunday, 19 September 2021 08:34 PM

@Sam Silva, It's media and the so called medical professionals who made this famous while the survival rate is 99%. If this was somewhere in 90's the situation wouldn't have been the same. Btw you need food to survive and it should be affordable, so the economy of the country is important . May be you are living in a glass house.

    Sam Monday, 20 September 2021 02:20 AM

This is regards to your suggestion to keep the deaths and cases a secret for tourism purposes. By the way I live in a regular house here

lets have our fingers crossed Monday, 20 September 2021 03:50 AM

In the US, vaccination has prevented severe illness and hospitalizations. May be this is now happening in Sri Lanka too. Also this could be the peak of another wave and hopefully the last wave.

Dr Vishwa Monday, 20 September 2021 05:13 AM

To Sachi Kuhananthan MD - Please cite your publication on natural immunity and also the contribution of T and B lymphocytes. Need the scientific evidence you propose and the exact mechanism of natural immunity you suggest. Rather than boasting about your proposal its better to provide the link to the immune pathway you "discovered". We have too many fake experts here who dont have an ounce of knowledge.

    Man Monday, 20 September 2021 07:40 AM

What a lock down. Bars too opened causing another wave. To reap benefits of the economic developments, people must not die of Covid.

    Hen Monday, 20 September 2021 07:45 AM

You people always talk too soon! Wait till the eggs are laid!!!

    Gen Monday, 20 September 2021 08:13 AM

Have they confirmed by increasing the PCR test or simply reducing the PCR test ? Never trust this moda Gontabaya ...and his crooks

    Gayan Monday, 20 September 2021 08:17 AM

Great victory for the opposition. Without their efforts govt would not have lockdown.

    Joshua Monday, 20 September 2021 09:17 AM

Tourism can bring in dollars and variants. Select what you like

    Jeevaratnehulla Monday, 20 September 2021 09:40 AM

Obviously some losers with vested interests will.want the country to be closed for longer periods. They tends to paint a bleak picture and see things through coloured lenses and thrive on misery and negativity either by default or driven by ulterior cheap political motives.

Anne Karunaratne Monday, 20 September 2021 09:44 AM

What is this lockdown when people have taken the law into their hands and from last week ALL shops are open! Sad to say but Wait for another couple of weeks and see what you reaped!!

    Prevention Monday, 20 September 2021 10:19 AM

The fact is that many infected people are not getting admitted to hospitals as they are scared of the conditions prevailing there. Hence it is prudent to continue with the restrictions imposed.

    Tupac Monday, 20 September 2021 11:17 AM

    Lockdown till Nov end

Gayan Fernando Monday, 20 September 2021 12:59 PM

Based on the learnings from the Spanish flu that prevailed in 1918-1920, waves may come and the virus may change to a new variant. But like any other natural living creature, there is a limit for it to keep on rapidly changing. It may do so for 2 to 3 years, but after that the growth of the virus will become very normal, and we would not need to think that much of these changing variants.

    Seal Monday, 20 September 2021 01:21 PM

Increase the no of PCR tests to know the actual situation

    ram Monday, 20 September 2021 01:52 PM

opening of wine shop will be added advantage in controlling covid spread as govt. thinks.

    Sam Monday, 20 September 2021 02:08 PM

Lockdown or not, it's upto each individual to look after themselves than depend on regulations. The prob is the transport of people who would have to go to work which cannot be matched, overseas passengers coming into the country, schools reopening, etc. Changes will have to be made compared to the previous and safety should have to be looked into without expecting thing to happen within a short period.

Seguna Banda Monday, 20 September 2021 03:22 PM

Efficiency of the NEW Health Minister!!

dickie bird Monday, 20 September 2021 06:24 PM

Major decline the reason that led to BARs opening. Hallelujah !!
