A Sri Lankan man from Jaffna who is currently residing in the UK has demanded Rs 1.7 million in ransom from a woman from Slave Island after threatening to release her photographs on social media.
Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said that the 33-year-old woman had lodged a complaint with the Police Women and Children’s Bureau claiming that the Sri Lankan had threatened her to pay the money.
According to the investigations, the woman had maintained a relationship online with the UK based Sri Lankan man and during the conversations through social media, the Sri Lankan man had reportedly obtained photographs of the woman including nude photographs.
However, when they broke up the relationship, the man threatened to release her photographs into social media unless she agreed to pay Rs. 1.7 million, SDIG Rohana said.
The woman agreed to pay Rs. 700,000 and the Sri Lankan had deployed two people to obtain the money, the spokesman said.
The two suspects were arrested when they attempted to collect the money at Union Place.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

The S/L police should report this to Scotland Yard and they will take the necessary action. This type of criminal behavior has no place in today's society. He needs to be arrested for extortion, which is a criminal act. She did what was right, reporting this criminal to law enforcement.

Release the pics to public to see whether it matches the women. The Police also can take pics of this women and send it to Interpol to check whether it matches with what the lover has. The women also can post some of her pics in public so that we know whether it is worth 1.7m.

These are common in today's society. Very uncommon in yesterday society. However, today, the law enforcement can take action. So , this Lankan in UK may have done this to many other women. This could be one of the money collection tactic used by diaspora to make a luxury living.

Some comments are typically male and ignorant. So the woman asks for it, right? Very funny when women are threatened by men like this and even commit suïcide, right?

If one was to cross a railway line with headphones blasting music, "asks for it, right?". If one thinks not wearing a face mask just once at a Public event

Very sad story of current etiquettes of SL community. This is where lot of work should be done by the religious institutions and religious leaders. Unfortunately they are doing everything else except for this.
