Jaffna among Lonely Planet’s top 25 cities to visit in 2026

Colombo, Oct. 27 (Daily Mirror) - Jaffna has been named one of the 25 best cities to visit in the world in 2026 by global travel publisher Lonely Planet.

The recognition marks a major milestone for Sri Lanka, reaffirming its international appeal as a destination rich in culture and heritage.

Lonely Planet’s selection of Jaffna highlights the city’s cultural and historical significance and reflects Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote regional diversity in tourism.

The Italian edition of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 was launched at a press conference in Milan on October 22.

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Milan, representing the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, took part in the event and showcased traditional cuisine from the Northern Province.

Of course, it includes the rest of Lanka. A great news even for the future generations of Sri Lankans, let alone the former expatriates. The islands of the peninsula are typically same as the Caribbean islands, if developed well.

Great moment for Jaffna people. Kudos to our present government. They are trying their best to treat all the races equally and giving them equal opportunities in order to prosper. When all the people are given these kind of opportunities, they won't think separation.

Does equal opportunity stretch to universities? Why are Sinhala students not treated well in Jaffna University, whereas Tamil students are able to study in all universities?

I agree with you. However the Indian government is willing to give a grant to upgrade Palaly airport to BIA level. NPP is not accepting it. Its minister Bimal Ratnayake says he is worried that if developed, it can fall down like Mattala. Can you decipher his intelligence?
