Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, yesterday instructed the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) to commence the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) project which had not been implemented during the last two years.
The decision was taken following a discussion held with the officials at the Transport Ministry regarding the RFlD system and about the non-implementation of the project.
Some officials said that although the preliminary work for the project has been completed, several practical issues were involved in the implementation of the project.
Identifying a vehicle through RFID radio minimization helps to reduce traffic congestion and several other issues in our country.
The project involves installing a RFlD tag on the front of each vehicle.
Addressing matters, Minister Amaraweera advised the Traffic Police and DMT to initiate the RFID project solution for road safety and to control the motor traffic during rush hours in urban areas. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
