The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had deviated from its original stance where they claimed earlier that the Government should obtain the people's mandate to implement the economic reforms of the IMF, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said today.
Speaking during the adjournment debate on the IMF report, he told Parliament that the IMF stressed in September last year that the Government should obtain the people's mandate to carry out the reforms of the IMF and questioned the IMF as to why it had changed its stance.
Kiriella said the Government was not in a position to implement the IMF conditions without seeking the mandate of the people.
"The Government is planning to sell off profitable Government ventures. They can't do so without obtaining people's mandate. It is against the mandate of 69 million who voted for the SLPP and the mandate of the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as they pledged not to privatize State institutions," he said.
The MP urged the Government to seek any mandate, be it Local Government elections or the General Election and added that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was not in a position to support the IMF report, which has put people's lives in distress due to IMF conditions. (Ajith Siriwardana)

IMF had not changed its mandate, but you fellows are now bankrupt with ideas on how to commence a new spate of robbing as now IMF is monitoring every penny that they give. Further, it is time senile fellows like you, Mahinda, Ranil, Werawansa, Gamanpilla get buried soon and allow honest younger generations to take over governance.

The SJB's duplicity is on display here. They have chosen to play to the gallery and if will seal it's election gate. The masses are more educated these days than they take for granted.

These guys failed in their sabotage attempts these past many months. Now they seek to continue their obstructionist journey. Keep barking and the caravan will move on leaving them far behind to live in the past and to lick their self inflicted wounds .

RW and his team is showing true leadership. Sadly an alternative force seems to lack it badly. Unable to extricate itself from in the quagmire of petty politics the SJB will continue wallow itself into insignificance .

Mr. Kirilella was right at his comment, actions of Ranil is an absolute SELLING of the whole COUNTRY which never, in fact, Chinese did when they invested in Sri Lanka more than US$10b on various Valuable-Projects. But for mere US$2.9b, the IMF, a puppet of the US, has bought whole ISLAND Sri Lanka.

This shows that Kiriella could steep down to any level to disrupt the country

SL people don't think about the country. So, no point seeking mandate for unpopular decisions.
