Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has called for a report regarding the incident that occurred in Jaffna between Ceylon Tamil Congress leader MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and police officers.
A heated argument erupted between MP Ponnambalam and officers in civvies including an intelligence officer when the MP arrived at a public meeting held at Vadamarachchi East recently.
It was reported that the MP had gone to the meeting without police security and intelligence officers had been deployed for his protection.
A video of the MP trying to attack and behaving violently has also been shared on social media.
According to the video, the MP was seen demanding the identity card from an officer who was in civvies and deployed to an examination centre in the area. The police officer said that he would nor give him the identity card as the MP had used indecent language. Ponnambalam said he will file action before court against the police officer concerned.
The MP was later seen telling a senior police officer who had arrived at the scene not to deploy police officers to the area who do not know the basic law.
The Public Security Ministry said Minister Alles had called for a report over the incident and that they will report the facts regarding the incident to court on Monday.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

If the video projected the incident properly, the behavior of the M P and the language he used was not appropriate to a M P. Police man too was abusive when he responded to the abusive language of the MP.

Watching the video was a cringe worthy experience. The language and behavior of people in Jaffna people including that of the MP is disgraceful. The government also using forces in civil to intimidate Tamils and building Viharas there is all army camps or vacant land also contributes to this animosity. I am not against building Viharas but against government involvement in it. Srilanka has a long way to becoming a civilized society.

The whole report will come out to discredit to MP who is voted by the voter base there. The SLPP cannot get any seats in that area, and the SLPP/government pushed on police are not trusted. The police are there to harm the MPs legitimate political activity. Any facts will be made up to suit the corrupted wants of Tiran, same man who when another Minister asked for illegal traveler with false passport to be let free, says the officer following Minister direction is wrong, and not the madman Minister giving it. Reprehensible attitude of Public Security Minister.

Why follow an MP all the money spent on those officers could be better spent elsewhere. Surely Sri Lanka is not a police state. When you infringe on the liberty of an MP or for that matter any human you don't expect him to be polite more so when you are a cop behaving like a goon.

The video clips are circulating in social media. The MP was meeting ordinary people and the intrusion of intelligence police officers was in public view was for spying. Otherwise the identity card which the MP was demanding was forthcoming. The MP was pointed with an automatic rifle from another uniformed police officer. This is not democracy in a free world. The MPs should be allowed to meet their electorate without interference from CID officers in plain clothes. We need to see SL as a free world so the local citizens and tourists can live and move freely without fear. When are we going to change for good after all the grievances

MP should raise a privilege issue in the Parliament and the Parliament which decided to call a Judge should call the IGP to the Parliament to answer questions. In SL we see STATE TERRORISM!

MP is wrong... There was an examination center and he cannot have a meeting next to school. Must move from that place. He must remember, people voted him to represent his people.
