The Ministry of Education had drawn its attention to admit the children whose parents pay income taxes to the state, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

He said their children would be admitted to grade in national schools.

The decision was taken to encourage the income taxpayers as they help the government to increase the national income, the Minister said.

He said, the required criteria to admit children to grade one would be made in the future with the help of the Inland Revenue Department. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Although I am a taxpayer, this idea is an absolute injustice to the poorer part of the population and violates the principle of equality of the constitution. For admission to a national school, only the distance from the child's residence to the school and the intelligence of the child should count. But not circumstances whether siblings attend this school or the fathers are Old Boys or any other nonsense. Also every kind of donation must be forbidden. If the rich do not like this, they can send their children to International Schools.

How many of you parliamentarians don't pay income tax, yet have your children in top state schools. Please divulge this information to the public.
