  • Forecasts outward labour migration to reach 333,000 in 2022
  • As of Aug. 1, 174,584 Lankans departed for foreign employment
  • Outward labour migration recorded over 300,000 only in 2014

With the prevailing deep economic and political crisis in the country driving the demand for foreign employments to unprecedented levels, the government expects the official outward labour migration to reach a new all-time high of 330,000 this year.

“Given the demand for foreign employment in Sri Lanka, we will now facilitate 330,000 foreign employments by the end of this year,” Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara announced last Saturday.

Accordingly, the senior management of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has reviewed and revised its annual business plan.

As of August 1, 174,584 Sri Lankans departed the country for foreign employment by registering with the SLBFE. However, the actual outward labour migration numbers are estimated to be much higher.  So far, Sri Lanka has only seen one instance where outward labour migration exceeded 300,000. In 2014, the country recorded 300,703 in outward labour migrations.

In 2021, 117,952 Sri Lankans departed the country for foreign employments, including around 78,000 new foreign employment seekers.  The vast majority of Sri Lankans are leaving the country for foreign employment in the unskilled and domestic aid (mostly housemaid) categories. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Oman remained as preferred destinations, accounting for over 80 percent of these departures. Recently, the government relaxed some of the barriers, encouraging the employees in the public sector to take up foreign employment opportunities. The SLBFE has also launched a survey to identify the demand for foreign employment in the public sector. Meanwhile, Nanayakkara revealed that worker remittance inflows had improved in July after declining to US $ 274 million in June.  For the first half, inward reminiscences plunged by 51.6 percent year-on-year to US $ 1.6 billion, with migrant workers continuing to remit a large swath of their earnings through unofficial channels such as Undiyal and Hawala, due to the attractive parallel exchange rates. So, if each new person sends USD 100 per month, it is going to be USD 300 000,000 additional money per month.

Only 78,000 new migrant workers have left the country. If each one of them send $100, the country will get $7.8 million per month

Our Tamil political leaders only wanted equality for the Tamils for which the Buddhist Sinhalese totally refused to agree. Resulting into the Tamil politicians becoming weak and irrelevant and easily pushed away by the Indian trained Tamil terror boys.Rest is history. Just imagine if the Sinhalese had agreed to grant equal status to the Tamils in the 60s, the Tamils in the North and the Sinhalese in the South would have jointly built a “mini superpower” Sri Lanka by now. But the racist Sinhalese prevailed and now country is fighting for it’s own existence.

When Covid -19 hit Sri Lanka in early 2020 there were nearly 100.000 Sri Lankan Housemaids working in the Middle East which was the main foreign exchange earner and not tea or tourism which the Government is ashamed to admit. Since the majority of Sri Lankans are trying to flee the country in a hurry due to the current crisis rather than for employment overseas they will eventually end up doing meniel jobs

The migration taking place is not only labour migration but also those who are escaping the law after looting the country's wealth. e.g.family members of politicians.

Let us try and increase these numbers considerably and as a first step our Foreign Minister make a whirlwind tour of the Gulf Countries and make a plea to the rulers to increase the intake quoting our deep economic problem for the reason. He could also use the opportunity to mend fences with the Gulf States with an aim of getting assistance from them esprcially relating to oil purchases.

@Hey Jaffna Tamil, you have been living in this country in equal status. During white rule you even had the previewed status. Your guys are attending the universities working in Government, private sector. This us even before you played a race card to get migration to western nations. The riots were not committed by larger community of sinhalese. Those were organised by on political parties. But majority of Tamils still live in all parts of the country. You can be the President if you remove your Tsmil only attitude. Lakshman Kadirgamer, Muttaiah Muralidaran are good Tamils who achieved greatness and all people respect them. I would have voted for Luxman Kadirgarmer if he contested for the presidency. But not Sumanthiran who is playing the tace card.

We strut in our self importance in our little island thinking greatly of ourselves. The Arab Muslim a religion we have targeted in our Buddhist paradise looks down on us and says you are a nation of maids. On some of my overseas trips to Arab countries when asked where you are from, I say Malaysia, Figi or Mauritius so that they don’t look and treat me with contempt

Politicians are sending Sri Lankans to work as slaves in other countries. Tea, Rubber and Coconut Plantains are getting neglected due to shortage of labour. Due to this very same reason, families are broken, children go astray. Instead of sending them to other countries, deploy them to improve the Plantation economy and the Agriculture of Sri Lanka.
