The gazette notification, which was issued making it compulsory to conduct Law College examinations only in English, was defeated in Parliament by 113 votes.
All government and opposition MPs except for MP Chandima Weerakkody voted against the gazette notification.
The Extraordinary gazette notification (2208/13) issued in December 2020 made it compulsory to conduct all Law College Examinations only in English.
After defeating the gazette notification, students who are facing the Law College Examinations will be allowed to face the examinations in a language of their choice either in Sinhala or Tamil. (Ajith Siriwardana)

This is a good move and many good students in Sinhala and Tamil medium can do their exam now .. English is important but not for examination but to work in courts but they can learn it as soon as they graduated from law college...

Language is something that should be thought from a child's early years to gain proper fluency in that language. Therefore school curriculum should be changed to teach English by making English the medium of instruction. Many will argue such change will kill Sinhalese/Tamil languages, which is pure nonsense. Sri Lanka produced scholars at a time English was the medium of instruction. Since the time Swabasha education was introduced, the country produced "frogs in the well"!!

A sign of backward nation. I wonder if Parliament now does the same thing for university exams which that are conducted in English. This country has gone mad. Btw, anyone cares about SL Law College qualifications? ln other developed countries, lawyers come out from universities, not third grade law colleges which admit any stupid politician. All most all SL politician is a lawyer as it is so easy to get admitted to law college.
