The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday urged President Maitripala Sirisena not to implement the Cabinet proposal on minimum qualification for entry into medical education until the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) would announce its stance on the matter.
The Cabinet paper was yesterday put forward by Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne declaring the minimum qualification for entry into medical education as two credit passes and one simple pass in the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination in one sitting for subjects of Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Naveen de Soyza told a news conference that the SLMC should gather and arrive at a decision on this matter before the next Cabinet meeting and added that this could be considered as the second instance where Minister Senaratne had gone against the technical decision of the SLMC.
“The SLMC should have a firm stance on this matter at this juncture. Even the GMOA would stand in line with the SLMC’s stand. The SLMC should not consider about any private medical university or Minister Senaratne during this procedure. President Sirisena should not approve this Cabinet proposal,” he added.
He said that the earlier approved minimum qualification for entry into medical education was three merit passes in 2017 which was calculated by the minimum result of the student who had qualified for the State medical faculties in the said year.
He also said Minister Senaratne was in an attempt to stand for the profit-earning institute like South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) with his proposal to degrade the minimum qualification to three simple passes which was finally decided as two credit passes and one simple pass.
“Minister Senaratne does not have the authority to do so,” he added. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

GMOA wanted a minimum standard from the government now what are they saying .Do they want to 3S passes to remain. why cant everyone come to agreement on a simple thing like this. something between 3A-3S .

SLMC is a professional body AND must not get involved in politics . GMOA can submit its proposals for perusal but should not expect its stance to be implemented . After all havent got time to attend to patience but use their valuable time to strike and make public statements which the general public are not interested .

Why should the GMOA get any say in this matter at all? The sole authority should be SLMC who is constitutionally given the right to maintain the medical education standard in SL. GMOA is a trade union. If SLMC has a problem with the min standard given by the government, they should protest. Don't they have a backbone to speak up?

What is he thinking of himself? He is only a trade union leader and a great enemy of the current government and a close friend of MR.
Rubert Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:44 PM
Whether he is an enemy of the government or not is not the point here. GMOA would always stand against any attempt by any government to tamper with their trade.

GMOA should not be a stumbling block for the progress of our country by insisting do away with private medical colleges (PMCs). PMCs are urgent need to this country. We should have appropriate standards on medical faculties entry requirements and maintenance of all aspects of medical faculties.Let this country progress as educational hub in Asia.

Under yahapalanaya all cabinet decisions are subject to trade union approval.

Are not entry requirements a matter for UGC and not the SLMC. How did they manage all these years
Mahila Thursday, 14 December 2017 05:18 PM
They are self declared Railway loco engineers, doctors, educationists et all. If you ask them for their A level results, 'mum' is the word or they cannot remember off hand. God's blessings that they remember what they studied at the medical faculty! Or is that a mystery too? What an outfit is this GMOA?
MO77 Friday, 15 December 2017 10:13 AM
This is the guy who said he forgot his A/L results. But, he still remember all the things he learnt in medical college. Lol

How can GMOA take decisions on the university entrance when remote area students are given preference . The students who take 3 A's and 2 C S can do well when they are at the faculty of medicine when receiving the similar treatment together even 2 C S receivers can excellent much better than 3 A s. receivers because gradings are criteria to understand certain degree of knowledge in a particular area so it is nothing wrong .The issue is, these fellows think selfishly that they should be worshipped by patients and the government sanctimoniously citing the qualification as their monopoly.
