The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday condemned the appointment of Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage to head the Health Ministry's Disaster Management Centre.

It said the appointment was a violation of the World Health Organization (WHO) rules and the regulations.

In a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena, the GMOA accused Dr. Kahandaliyanage of having direct contacts with multinational dairy companies and on that basis he was disqualified from participating in any Health Ministry work.

GMOA President Anuruddha Padeniya said the appointment tarnished the Health Ministry’s image which was nurtured by the President when he was Health Minister.

He said based on scientific evidence the WHO had put a stop to multinational dairy companies being involved in disaster management because these companies were known to use such situations to promote themselves.

Dr. Padeniya requested the President to rescind the Health Ministry decision immediately. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Dear Dr. Padeniya, You are a govt. employee and a practicing doctor. Confine yourself to that role. Do not get confused and try to do the job of the JO or WHO. H. E. The President knows what he is doing and what he should not be doing. All doctors in govt. service do not oppose the SAITM and do not support agree with your strikes. Although you oppose and as president of GOMA get the members of GOMA to participate in your unfavourable strikes, which affects the poor. Similarly, all employees of multi national milk/dairy companies do not do unsavoury things in disaster management to support their companies

In Sri Lanka Doctors are given too much respect but not in the West. Last week in Britain a top English Surgeon was sentenced to 15 years in prison for medical malpractice.

Why is President tolerating this stupid guy Padeniya. He should have been taken into custody for striking. Why is the President not reducing and bring under control the private consulting fees of the doctors to teach GMOA a lesson. Is the President so scared of these GMOA members as well?
