The Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security has granted approval to revise the fine of US$500 in addition to the visa fees to foreigners who have overstayed their period of valid visas.
The approval was given at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security held recently under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles.
Accordingly, it has been recommended that no penalty should be levied for departure at an approved port of the Department of Immigration and Emigration within a period of 7 days or less than the overstaying period of valid visa without getting extended the period of visa, to levy a penalty of USD 250 for an overstaying period of more than 07 days and overstaying period of 14 days or less and to levy a penalty of USD500 for overstaying period of more than 14 days.
This step has been taken in accordance with the requests made by various parties regarding the promotion of tourism, attracting investors and due to the inconvenience caused to officials working in foreign missions operating in Sri Lanka due to having to pay the above penalty.
Accordingly, these orders are to be approved by the Parliament on a future date.

Recall one of our Sri Lankan girl was arrested in Japan for overstaying her visa and then treated harshly in prison by the Japanese prison guards and later she died. Those Sri Lankans clamouring to treat visa overstayers as if they are criminals please remember the Sri Lankan girl in Japan. When I was a university undergraduate in England, British government treated the foreign students from Asia like criminals if any of them overstayed their visa, not forgetting Britain “overstayed” in Sri Lanka for 150 years.

So foolish. A bankrupt country like SL needs all the foreigners to stay as long as they can, PROVIDED they have enough cash.

Over staying leniency will be abused by some foreigners who come from poor countries.

Sri Lanka begs tourists to visit the Island. Then they (SL) fine them if they overstay! Mainly, through circumstances beyond their control. Every person and their dog is desperately trying to get out of the country. But the Immigration department assumes that even Australian passport holders would rather live in that hell-hole than return to Australia. Btw, if anyone is suffering from constipation; the best cure is to have an interaction with an immigration officer. It will give you the s...s !!!

The same way, dual citizenship charges for ex-Sri Lankans must be reduced. Its way too high.

Do not penalize overstayers, treat them as if they were in their home countries and attend their difficulties and reasons for overstaying, case by case. Since they, the more overstay they will spend more in SL, thus making a good contribution towards our ailing economy.

Give the foreigners any amount of time if they don’t engage in doing business or involve in any criminal activity. They will contribute to our economy and Ranil too can use the money to go an attend funerals and coronation ceremonies.

Following professional Ideas: 1.) Visa by arrival up to six months directly at Airport with reasonable Visa fees (US 20 $ per month) 2.) Spouse Visa must be free of any charges 3.) despite counteracting daily charge US 5 $ penalty diretly by departure OR prison until the fees is paid...AND everyone will see and understand how this regulation works with currency profit like in many other countries (Thailand, Malaysia, etc.)...Dr. UK Ludt PH.D. from Germany
