The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today asked why the proposed Financial City could not be constructed inland instead of building it on land reclaimed from the sea.
JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a media briefing that finding a block of land for this project in Colombo would not be that difficult.
“There are enough spacious lands in the Colombo City to build the Financial City without doing so on land reclaimed from the sea and causing an environmental hazard,” he said.
Mr. Dissanayake said the coastal belt extending through Wellawatte, Mount Lavinia and Moratuwa would be severely affected by sea erosion resulting from reclaiming land from the sea.
“All hotels along this coastal belt will be destroyed in time to come,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

Absolutely correct. Reclaiming land is good for countries such as S'pore as they have limited land space, but SL does not have this problem. If we were to locate this financial city even in an outstation area, it would be still cost half inclusive of building a highway from the financial city to Colombo. It is clear that Ali Baba again had his own agenda.

This man and his party is an obstacle for the development of this country. Colombo need to modernize and need to compete with other regional cities. Financial City is a very good idea and politics aside should support development.Hypothetical damages to the coastal belt is hearsay. Prophets of doom predicted the destruction of Kandalama area with the construction of the Hotel. The effects are just the opposite. These people will oppose everything for the sake of opposing.

Why did you all then oppose to it when MR started project in much FC in-flowing manner which by now could have been completed? Anura Go ahead, stop all!

There are financial centres in Dubai but these are not on reclaimed lands. The country need to get the priorities correct first like public transport over private transport.

Anura you are 100% correct especially talking of erosion which is sure and will cause heavy losses to houses and establishments from Wellawatte coast onwards, could be even Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya.

Nobody is protesting against a financial city. What is wrong is why spend billions on reclaiming land when enough land is available inland!!!!

I agree with Anura Dissanayaka on this matter. There is enough land to utilize for this project if you go little north of Colombo.

As correctly said by Late JRJ, they are a permanent dark cloud over SL.
