The Central Bank of Sri Lanka said speculations mislead that expatriates' remittances to Sri Lanka are taxed and forcibly converted into Sri Lankan currency is completely false.
There are no taxes on remittances and Sri Lankan expatriates are free to maintain such remittances in foreign currency or convert such remittances into Sri Lankan rupees at their discretion, the CBSL said.
Expatriate Sri Lankans can continue to enjoy the current incentives without any change whatsoever.

But the conversion rate is outright exploitation...... many remittances have to be converted to rupees to put rice in the clay pots on the wood burning stoves and with luck a few fish heads and bush tucker grubs. The statement from Central Bank is from a position of privilege.

In Sri Lanka policies change overnight and different policies for different ppl. When govt and its massive number of inefficient officials get there acts in order every thing will fall in line.

It will be very difficult to build trust. The trust was built over decades and it can be destroyed in a day. Most saved in foreign currency in Sri Lanka banks. Not anymore. They will only send the bare minimum for expended of family and next of kin.

What is the point. If they need to take some foriegn exchange for any requirement they won't allow it. From my AUD NRFC I used in australia, I was charged for every transaction around 6 to 10 dollars as service charge. If you draw cash which is limited to 100 dollars, the service charges are between 12 to 16 dollars. Credit card they charge 30 to 50 rupees a dollar.

You guys will change any rule within hours. How do you expected expatriates to believe in what you say. When the begging cannot go on anymore these expatriates will face the music. When a bank pays 10% on USD deposit , it tells you we are in the Greece standard or status.

I can prove that you are exploiting the expatriate’s remittance because you have done to my account. It clearly says CBSL charges!!!

Once remittances are made, for the necessary unproductive expenses the government will fit in few fresh policies accordingly. No assurance given for the FX remittances.

If you try to forcibly convert export earning, IT professional salaries or any other personal or corporate forex remittances . it will breach trust. In todays world maintain an account in a foreign country is simple as some mouse clicks as all are online . CBSL is thinking in stone age

Have remittances since 2019 on my PFCA account. Still intact and earning good interest!

What are the current incentives to enjoy that you are talking about? I recently visited SL and at the airport, the conversion rate is so low (it was about almost 20 rupees less than the real exchange rate). Why bother changing your dollars? Government officials, policy makers and everyone else in SL are so inefficient, this country will never get out of this mess. A country run by lunatics and managed by clowns.
