The Elections Commission (EC) has gazetted 157 symbols to be used by political parties at the forthcoming Parliamentary polls though there are only 70 registered political parties eligible to contest elections.
Interestingly, there are symbols that give extremely peculiar and humorous feelings to the voter among those gazetted in addition to much common and well-known party symbols familiar with Sri Lankans for generations like Elephant, Hand, Betel Leaf, Chair, Cart Wheel, Bell, Pohottuwa, House, Eagle and Swan etc.
Among the list of symbols just gazetted by the EC, there are a number of animals like Giraffe, Rhinoceros, Camel, Eagle and Kangaroo that have been seen by many of Sri Lankans only at the Zoological Garden.
Other creatures in the list except the Elephant, Swan and Eagle are Rabbit, Cobra, Horse, Peacock, Deer, Cat, Squirrel, Crocodile, Parrot, Crab, Cockerel, Owl, Mouse, Fish, Dog, Tortoise and Snail.
Ship, Plough, Veena, Flower, Two Leaves, Mobile Phone, Cup, Trishaw, Mammoty, Boat, Bulb, Ear of Paddy, Table, Bow and Arrow, Candle, Omnibus, Ladder, Anchor, Trophy, Flaming Torch, Airplane, Key, Envelop, Flower Vas, Clay Lamp, (matipahana) Pair of Scissors, Bed, Pair of Spectacles, Canoe, Sword, Balloon, Comb of Plantain (keselavariya) Double Flag, Mango Fruit, Iron, Well, Goblet, Kettle, Comb, Jack Fruit, Almirah, Winnowing Fan (kulla) Typewriter, Sledge Hammer, Spoon and Coconut Scraper (hiramane) are also in the list.
With the publication of the gazette with the new list of party symbols, the gazette notification issued on January 30, 2017 with the list of symbols would be cancelled, the EC said. (Sandun A Jayasekera)
