Kurunegala Magistrate Sampath Kariyawasam today ordered to further remand Dr. Mohamed Shafi of the Kurunegala Hospital until July 25.
Dr. Shafi was produced in the court today after withdrawing the three-month detention order against him.
Producing the suspect, the CID informed the Magistrate that although he was detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the evidence presented against him was inadequate to prove that he was linked to terrorist activities.
The CID also requested the court to allow the SHG test for the 147 mothers who complained that they experienced complications in conceiving for over two years after getting treated by Dr. Shafi.
Lawyers of Dr. Shafi informed the court that allegations against their client were not true. They also requested the Magistrate that the SHG test should be performed on those mothers and they are not against it.
The magistrate ordered to further remand the suspect, considering the seriousness of the allegations against the accused.
The 42-year-old doctor attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital was arrested by the police on May 24 and later handed over to the CID. He was accused of earning assets through suspicious means.

"seriousness of the allegations against the accused." We suppose allegations against politicos in hoarding money abroad and also owning hotels in Dubai are NOT THAT SERIOUS !

Mr. definition necessary; those politicians, I believe, never spoilt expected-mothers to hoard money abroad. This is what it is considered "SERIOUS".

The Police should check the wealth of all the doctors working in government hospitals, irrespective of their ethnicity. I am certain hundreds of these so called doctors would be unable to account for their wealth.

When the Police said not enough evidence he should have been enlarged on bail with restrictions. Now the Magistrate has given time for Police to fish for evidence. Did the Magistrate go to a Law School?
