World Cup-winning cricket captain and Minister Arjuna Ranatunga today requested Sri Lankan Cricket lovers to stop behaving like Indian spectators at the end of cricket matches.

Addressing the media at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Head Office yesterday he said an incident had been reported as spectators had thrown plastic bottles into the ground during the third one day international cricket match between Sri Lanka and India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Sunday.

“Such incidents should not be repeated. Sri Lankans love cricket and they feel sad when we lose a match. We have made lots of sacrifices for cricket and those sacrifices had been made while loosing lots of things. Every cricketer in out team are mentally depressed,” he said.

Therefore, I request our cricket lovers not to behave like Indian spectators. We have a very good history and culture. Such misbehaviour is not accepted in our culture and history,” Mr. Ranatunga said.

"Several cricketers had been summoned before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) and I informed about it to President Maithripala Sirisena who promised to look into the matter", he said.

The outspoken Minister also said an interim committee has to be appointed to probe frauds and irregularities at Sri Lanka Cricket, alleging that cricket was now being virtually run by gamblers who have put cricket at stake. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Further, local "Heros" like to hit and bat on schoolboys and undergraduates!!!

    Ruwan Tuesday, 29 August 2017 08:43 AM

It is very true that uncivilized behaviour come from the top to the bottom , both sides of politicians but in this context I agree with Arjuna that we have lost core values of the game for money , this needs to be corrected soon

    Upul Monday, 28 August 2017 10:52 PM

Please do not try to take your revenge from chairman of the cricket board using this poor performance of the cricketers. The cricketers should take the responsibility for their actions too. Its not once twice or thrice, we have lost all the matches we played with India. The cricket board, the players, and the sports minister, all of them are responsible for the game of cricket in Sri Lanka.

    Ama Tuesday, 29 August 2017 11:15 AM

    BAD comment for the century.

    Hemaka Tuesday, 29 August 2017 07:41 AM

Cricket needs to be reformed by the grass root level it self, I have personely experienced how unfairly team selections are been done a decade ago at school itself.Fraud starts from lower level spreds like cancer and before you know it your a victim. when it comes to cricket if you compare with the English team we are mile or kilometers benefon what we were ten years ago and that's simply because the ECB has clear plan which is headed by the right personel, starting from the school coach it self.In Sri Lanka i's quite the contrast with very few good and right people to work with.We need a national policy forcricket or else there will be a day when states afight for test test

Offended 1 billion people in 5 minutes. Diplomacy is not this guys forte

sacre blieu Tuesday, 29 August 2017 09:04 AM

Regretfully the players in all sports are their for the limelight and the money, not for the real spirit of the game. Even the majority of the officials are also gaining much more than they deserve and the government is wasting a lot of money with the sports bodies in a swirl of fraud, bribery , and corruption. When the sport is played for money, there will also follow heavy gambling and like a block buster movie the blood pressure builds up to the point of bursting a vessal with the main satisfaction for base desire.

Sri Lankan Tuesday, 29 August 2017 09:12 AM

Please do not make the same statement of what all other Sri Lankans are making "Like Indians... Like Indians...". We all are same. Its just that they are from a much more aggressive, expressive and dominating culture which has taken them a long way in the world in many areas. Whereas we are not so and it shows where we are. Also, our people too just showed on Sunday that we are no different to Indians because when frustration hits any human, this will be the outcome. If you say Indians are barbarians, so we are... It's time to get the SLC and the cricket team cleaned up from their stupid attitude...

    gamini Tuesday, 29 August 2017 09:15 AM

why are you poking your nose in to the affairs of another ministry

Ronnie Bugger Tuesday, 29 August 2017 11:11 AM

Probably because the ministry responsible is full of shit in all hues and shades of sprts, that's why

    sujata Tuesday, 29 August 2017 09:16 AM

yeah, yeah we know very well about your 2500 year old culture and history

    Niz Tuesday, 29 August 2017 09:43 AM

Yeah yeah not only Indian spectators but also some of our members in parliament

Ronnie Bugger Tuesday, 29 August 2017 11:13 AM

Yeah, this is a good one ?

    Mister D Tuesday, 29 August 2017 10:26 AM

I understand what he is trying to say but when you say "Indian spectators" it means everyone. I don't think It's a good or smart choice of words for a person of his stature to be used at a press conference.

    Dot Tuesday, 29 August 2017 07:08 PM

No country profiles should be used when we have to take action on the behaviour of our own countrymen ,,this is bad diplomacy ...just not acceptable ..

    VJ Tuesday, 29 August 2017 11:02 AM

His statement reveals his character. He owes an apology to all cricket loving Indian spectators.

    Eraj Tuesday, 29 August 2017 12:08 PM

yes, he should only comment on the incident and should not make a common platform for all indian spectators. He has no genuine intent to SL cricket

    addin Tuesday, 29 August 2017 12:42 PM

Dont take it seriouse my friend. He may not mean all the indian. But he gave an example of the 1996 semi final incident at eden garden.

    Daya Tuesday, 29 August 2017 01:16 PM

    Yes. I fully agree

    Sambo Tuesday, 29 August 2017 12:21 PM

Very true Mr. Minister. Don't act like barbarians when we loose matches. The only thing is keep away from watching Sri Lanka cricket. This type of action is only seen in our parliament. Don't make worse.

    Arnold Tuesday, 29 August 2017 12:42 PM

Send in the army to play the next match, or outsource it to China.

    alex Tuesday, 29 August 2017 01:17 PM

very soon you will called to make an unconditional apology to Indians

    sobers Tuesday, 29 August 2017 01:57 PM

Not a Diplomatic statement at all.

    Ceylonese Tuesday, 29 August 2017 06:11 PM

We know how you behaved on the cricket field and brought the game to disrepute by arguing and fighting with umpires and the opposition gesturing rudely with pointed fingers.

    Mason Tuesday, 29 August 2017 06:20 PM

Arjuna, why are you comparing the Sri Lankan fans to the Indian counterparts. This is not the first incident, Sri Lankan fans have behaved boorishly before too.

    Ravi Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:07 AM

Keep calm, We are SinhaLe and this is our behaviour.

    GH Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:15 AM

It is not a big issue compared to the YAHAPALANAYA which behaves the whole SRI LANKA as one of the Indian STATES!

    Thomas Wednesday, 30 August 2017 02:00 PM

Bloody Fatso up to his cheap tricks to divert attention from real problems. There are good and bad in each society.shame on you Ranatunga.Give the respect due to your countrymen as well as to others.

    Sanjaya Monday, 04 September 2017 12:03 PM

Dear Mr Ranatunga, You are a respected person in cricket world. I would like you to visit India, and I will also bear the cost of your travel. As a nation SL is very close to Indian hearts. I would like you to change your perception about our country. You will not find any kind of animosity of Indians towards SL for sure, rather you will enjoy the rich culture of India, it's food and people. Please share your travel plan.
