The police who are yet to make an arrest over the murder of Dinesh Schaffter, the director of Janashakthi Company, has questioned more than 30 persons including Schaffter’s wife so far and police said they would be able to arrest the killers soon by solving the mystery of the murder.   Sources within the CID said that many facts are currently being revealed regarding how Dinesh Schaffter, who was killed, came from his house to the Borella cemetery.

It was revealed that Schaffter left his home at Flower Road and directly entered the Borella Cemetery where he stopped at only one place to have a snack.
Police said they have gathered footage from more than 40 CCTV cameras and are currently investigating each angle.

They said the CID had monitored security cameras on Schaffter’s route from his house to Borella cemetery and several vehicles that were travelling behind his vehicle were also noticed.

Meanwhile, sources said that the CID has recorded a number of statements from several persons including Schaffter’s wife and some of Shafter’s close relatives.

Investigations carried out so far had revealed that a text message was sent from the mobile phone of Dinesh Schaffter to the mobile phone of former cricket announcer Brian Thomas after Schaffter became a victim of criminals at the Borella Cemetery.

Sources said they suspect that Schaffter’s murder was not the result of sudden anger or a spur-of-the-moment incident and that it was a pre-planned murder.
They suspect that the person who brought Schaffter to the cemetery had brought him there with the plan to kill him.

This is going to be another cold case like the infamous Easter Sunday bombings. Thanks to our very efficient police and the CID.

Dinesh Schaffter gave damming evidence at the Presidential Commission investigating Ranil / Malik bond scam. There is an invisible hand working from the top to hush this murder by buying time. The present police is not worth one cent ( I mean Sri Lanka cents and not US cents}.

For someone to give 1400 million to a chap like Thomas, very fishy.

Has no one questioned the financial dealings of Dinesh Schafter.? If Brian Thomas had not contacted him as is evident now whom did he go to meet without taking anyone with him nor informing his wife. Very very fishy indeed. 1409 million given to Brian Thomas who is obviously a proxy. From where is all this money?

Jagath Alvis Wednesday, 21 December 2022 11:16 AM

There is a high chance the person who committed the crime has fleed out of the country by now.. Good luck catching him..

At last fate is catching with him Wednesday, 21 December 2022 11:24 AM

Cricket announcer Brian Thomas is a Christian of upcountry Tamil family. He studied at Trinity but a big lier. I am sure he is involved . CID must ask him to confess or take him to show where the weapons are hidden. Don’t trust the Christians.

    Shelly Wednesday, 21 December 2022 01:22 PM

Wow. How did this end up being a Christian issue? Only a pea-sized brain would think this way.

    Redflame Wednesday, 21 December 2022 11:45 AM

This is sophisticated murder done with least evidence left. It will be a big challenge to the CID to uncover the truth. Don't think phone details or CCTV had left anything. It will be a next level investigation to the CID.

This is the reason UNHRC is calling for many war criminals who are holding top posts in the present government to be punished. As long as fellows such as Gen. Shavendra, Maj Prabath Bulatwatte, Sgt. Sunil Ratnayake etc... are holding posts of authority, criminality will be daily business.

This is true. Having military personnel appointed to civilian jobs including to the position of Defence Secretary is unbecoming in a democracy. Military personal once retired should not be appointed to government positions.

Check CCTV footage of those leaving the cemetery after the time of Shafter's death. Check all mobile phone to and from the towers around the cemetery from around 1 pm to 3 pm on the fateful day.

    Era Wednesday, 21 December 2022 01:56 PM

Absolutely...the police seem to be too keen to clear Brian Thomas.

I just happened to find out that Arjuna Mahendran, the former central bank Governor and Dinesh Schaffter were both living in flower road.

This cemetery has a cremation carried out at every 20 minutes. There are people always. The cemetery laborer's can not be innocent either. How could such strangulation be gone un-noticed? Sure there would have been some commotion. If Dinesh's employee could find him easily, the car couldn't have gone too much interior to a place where the location was out of visibility. The laborer-witnesses must have been paid a hefty sum, or there must have been other goons installed at the cemetery by the mastermind, to distract the laborer's

When the Armed Forces are involved, we Sinhalese are cowards and look the other side and allow them to commit any crime under the sun or moon. If the victim was a Minority, we even will tell we did not see or hear anything like what we did to Dr. Shafi.

First find out how did Scrafter amass so much of money and if he had lent them to BT, what had happened to it? Besides, as claimed by many he was a main witness in the unsolved CB Bond scam, it could be the work of an highly experienced hit men.

We are a failed state in the maw of corrupt leaders and non-functionning institutions. The uprising was our chance to purge ourselves of the plunders and murderers who have brought us low. If we don't care to be permanent victims of a repulsive political class then we have to get off our knees and rise again.

No Dinesh Schaffter, just shafted Wednesday, 21 December 2022 02:52 PM

All I can say is that Dinesh Schaffter has been well and truly shafted!

    C Fernando Wednesday, 21 December 2022 05:32 PM

What an insensitive comment, though you might think it's funny. Remember he was a husband, a father, a son, a brother. His family is in shock and grief. Would you like it if this was one of your loved ones and someone made a comment like you just did.

    Cherath Wednesday, 21 December 2022 03:19 PM

Every day Sri Lanka registers a multitude of gruesome killings, robberies, poisonings, absolutely bizarre road accidents due to careless and suspected drunk drivers on unroadworthy ramshackle vehicles. Most killings go unresolved too. No good advert for foreigners to dump their money here.

    Disgusted Wednesday, 21 December 2022 04:19 PM

Why would a Chairman of any company go to meet anyone known or unknown to him at a cemetery, sounds fishy!!. Usually they would meet up in the office of the Chairman or a hotel. What was Brian given all those millions for, people just do not dole out hundreds and thousands, leave alone millions to someone like Brian and how was Brian supposed to repay him and in what time frame, sounds fishy too!!. There has to be more to this than Brian Thomas.

Cam Sab Wednesday, 21 December 2022 04:20 PM

    1. If he was the main witness in the central bank bond case, 2. If the murderers are not caught by now, there is high possibility that the culprits are close to Ranil and/or Rajapakses and will never be caught.

    Disgusted Friday, 23 December 2022 10:03 AM

Why didn't the Chairman have his car LOCKED so he could have driven off when he realised the person or persons were NOT Brian, as he would have recognised Brian was NOT at the meeting point??. Definitely more to this case than meets the eye and why go from Model Farm entrance where there is hardly any funerals taking place during the afternoon, very strange that part of the premises is lonely, the get away car could have been out of site and more ways of making a run for it. I pray the investigation is carried out truthfully and those responsible given the FULL force of the law, though it appears the LAW is controlled by a bunch of crooks and their cronies. I see the Chairman was a witness in the so called SUGAR Bond Scam, may have been a contract hit.
