The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that it was uncovered suspect Fazal Mohamed Nizar, a businessman who is currently detained, handled a communication network without the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) authority and maintained links with the people connected to the Easter Sunday's coordinated suicide attack through that network.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate, Mohamed Mihal the CID said the suspect had maintained links with 494 individuals through the said network including a Muslim politician.
The CID further informed the Magistrate that it had to encounter several difficulties to conduct the inquiry, since most of the contacts in the above network were maintained without revealing their identities.
Fazal Mohamed Nizar was arrested by the CID on January 11 and ordered to be detained for three months for interrogation. The CID arrested the suspect for sharing defaming posts aimed at Buddhist monks on social media platforms including Facebook.
The CID informed the Magistrate within a short period of time, the suspect had indulged in transactions amounting to Rs.60 million through his bank account and the suspect had spent more than Rs. 300,000 per month.
Currently, the suspect is being detained and questioned under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). Earlier, the CID also informed the Magistrate that according to the investigation, the suspect had directly involved in several controversial incidents that had taken place in the country in the recent days. Communicating without divulging identities suggests quite a degree of sophistication and long term planning. Source of his funds should be investigated asap!

A British woman was imprisoned for 25 years for inciting and planning only, which suggests how seriously other countries take all aspects related to terrorism. Perhaps we should take similar measures to keep our country safe.

Police have found a scape goat to cover the top people who should be charged for dereliction of duty/responsibility. As the top men this man too does not appear to have been directly involved

"a businessman who is currently detained, handled a communication network without the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) authority" What? No one in their right mind will seek TRC approval to maintain a clandestine network for terrorist activities.
