The United States today said it was deeply concerned by the appointment of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva as Army Commander.

In a statement, it said the allegations of gross human rights violations against him, documented by the United Nations and other organizations, are serious and credible.

“This appointment undermines Sri Lanka’s international reputation and its commitments to promote justice and accountability, especially at a time when the need for reconciliation and social unity is paramount,” it said.

    SKM Monday, 19 August 2019 04:18 PM

All these are anonymous or made up complaints. Anybody can do it against anybody. And one day we will have to bring someone from USA or UK to command our army as no one dares find what they are doing around the world.

A new era of undemocratic practices are about to dawn. This appointment is only to strengthen Gota's entry. Good luck sri lankans

John Smith Monday, 19 August 2019 04:58 PM

This statement is a flagrant interference with an internal matter of Sri Lanka. Poking the nose in small counties every day business seems to be a nasty habit they can’t get rid of.

Insulting us as usual. What amazes me is the fact that our people fail to see the difference between USA and China. Has China ever insulted us like this?

    Nalaka Monday, 19 August 2019 05:16 PM

Those are only allegations, based on lies and diaspora propaganda ! I am happy that President of Sri Lanka didn't make the decision based western opinions.

There is nothing surprise. In the land of barbarians, war criminals will become Commanders and presidents.

We are all deeply concerned that Donald Trump continues to be your President

june macapagal Monday, 19 August 2019 06:42 PM

He has committed several war crimes and this has been proved and documented. in simple words accountability in this country is not taken to account.

    TJ Monday, 19 August 2019 08:04 PM

If the documented allegations are serious and credible, why can't you prosecute him in the ICJ? US has a habit of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds, which they call the "diplomacy".

charith seneviratne Monday, 19 August 2019 08:18 PM

USA look after your own problems. No human rights in USA. People are getting shot up there. So mind your own damn business.

Ram Singh Monday, 19 August 2019 08:22 PM

Loads of untruthful comments. As an Indian I know your Sri Lankan Army was not an angel in Mullaitivu.

Yes, this appointment is a disgrace to our Army. Even our local commissions have made findings against him... he should not have been made commander unless he first cleared his name
