The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has decided to print 50 driving licence cards to be distributed under the one-day service scheme until the department meets its target of covering the 600,000 temporary driving licence cards issued, department commissioner General Nishantha Anurudda Weerasinghe said.
He said the department had received 500,000 cards to cover its capacity and had started printing the cards since last Monday (14).
"The department has the capacity to print 1,700 cards within a day. While printing 50 cards for the one-day service, the remaining daily capacity (1,650) will be printed until the target of 600,000 is met," he said.
Until the arrears were covered, the DMT had decided to print 50 driver's licence cards per day under the one day service scheme. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Earlier driver licence was for life time, making need to get new one every few years has caused this mess. Also, if the capacity is 1,700 cards whether it's temporary or license or proper one, the way its said in the article, doing more temporary ones instead of proper ones makes the DMT look backwards. And at a rate of only 1,650 temporary cards a day, the 600,000 areas will take well over a year, since DMT office is not open seven days a week.

They wouldn't give permanent cards. If they do, their income would be reduced.
