The curfew imposed within the Western Province has been extended to 5.00 a.m, November 9 considering the current Covid-19 situation in the province, Army Commander Shavendra Silva said.

He said the decision was made after analysing the Covid-19 cases reported in the last two days in the Province, their locations and contacts.

“The reason that the highest number of cases has been reported from the Western Province has also compelled us to extend the curfew,” he said.

Meanwhile, Army Commander said the quarantine curfew imposed on Eheliyagoda Police area in Ratnapura District, Kurunegala Municipal Council area and Kuliyapitiya Police Division will also be extended until November 9.

“The motive behind the imposition of a curfew is with the expectation that people stay at home as much as possible in order that they do not expose themselves to society,” he stressed.

Thus, he requested people not to venture outside except for essential purposes until the situation returns to normalcy.

Army Commander also requested people living in other districts where there is no curfew to restrict from crossing their areas but to try and stay at their residences as much as possible.

The curfew was due to be lifted tomorrow 5.00 in the Western Province and several other area. In addition, the curfew, which had been already imposed on areas prior to the imposition of curfew on the Western Province, was to retain.

However, according to the latest decisions, the curfew imposed within the Western Province and some other areas has been extended to 5.00 a.m, November 9.

Meanwhile, Army Commander said the Government had decided to grant a relief package to those in quarantine process at their residences in the country and added Rs 5,000 allowance would also be distributed among chosen low-income families in the Western Province. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

    Exactly...

"I am sir, your obedient servent" Sunday, 01 November 2020 09:09 PM

To me your words "People at top" is misnomer. Remember like in the good old days these people (you mean) when addressing letters to us - instead of the use of "yours faithfully" are to say "I am sir, your obedient servant" . This is exactly what they are - as we pay them as well with our hard earned money. When it comes to Politicos - that breed generally are even very much lower even in education status than our "obedient servants". This is the correct position

    Superfood Sunday, 01 November 2020 09:33 PM

So true. Do they expect a to stock goods for a month? Earlier they said that they'll open two days now it is stretched for a week. How do they expect us to get our basics so suddenly. Atleast they should have told earlier.

Didn't they say earlier that curfew will only be upto 2nd to stop people travelling out of colombo for the weekend? And now coz of that people fled Colombo and now we all need to lockdown, people aren't smart enough for this problem to go away, need more intelligent people doing damage control, not the dinosaurs we have innpower

We are suffering and the government not at least bothered, they don't care they have the power for next 5 years to rule sell the country to china or americar and they will do the rest to protect the poor people suffering, what can do with the Rs 5,000 not enough for 3days

    cineha Sunday, 01 November 2020 10:10 PM

I wish they had a lockdown similar to what they announced in UK. Thats the most practical way of doing things without inconveniencing the public.

Adam Speak Monday, 02 November 2020 01:07 AM

Enough is enough, now the government is loosing all the credibility and respect that people have. Stop telling cheap lies and deception. Be practical and considerate, how will people Eat and Drink. Politicians will never ever understand the problems of common people. No matter who rules!!

It is apparent that people handling here do not have the appropriate knowledge or skill of handling this I wish it is handled by the professionals who has the knowledge of health related matters

Prianka Seneviratne Monday, 02 November 2020 03:08 AM

Why did the Commander announce yesterday (Saturday), with such authority and confidence, that curfew will not be extended beyond Monday? In the past few days, the top health regulators stated then typical symptoms and outcomes when infected that the world has known for several months. Is the Government lof the people, by the people, for the people are making false and archaic statements or is it the media misquoting the Commander's statement? When there is so much uncertainty, is shutting down the engine of economic growth the most prudent way to stop the spread of the virus? Is it not better to increase the penalties on violators of the the health and social standards than preventing people from earning a living through curfewp

Colombo's English Speaking Liberals are starving!

Ruwan Fernando Monday, 02 November 2020 05:00 AM

So in other words, the Army Commander of Sri Lanka lied when he said the curfew was for the 3 day weekend only. How and why should we believe anything he says again?

    ajith77 Monday, 02 November 2020 05:19 AM

Government has no plans to run private sector. They are at the verge of collapse and decision makers are not aware about importance of private sector and the economy. Please do not ask to pay taxes later

    Milinda Monday, 02 November 2020 07:21 AM

I see politicians from Western Province have left the the area over the weekend and infecting people in other provinces They are visiting Temples, other public places of interest like cultural sites, National parks , Tourist resorts They even have media briefings and even give voice cuts to the T V stations. Aren't they holidaying outside the Western Province utilising public funds? Also they use the state resources like vehicles Fuel Security staff etc. Who pays for these expenses? Why no quarantine laws applicable to these political jokers? One nation One law for everyone Are ťhese politicians have divine power and are not possible carriers of Covid 19 virus. ? Your guess is good as mine.

    Ravi Monday, 02 November 2020 08:17 AM

Pretty impossible to contain a virus like covid in sri lanka as people have no discipline or consideration of others. Please open up, few people will die but it is better than total starvation and economic collapse. In context Sri Lanka has 3500 road accident deaths. 2000 dengue deaths. Cornona deaths may be 5000 a year. Lets move on.

    ram Monday, 02 November 2020 09:33 AM

Sri Lanka would have contained COID if it had not held election. As a result of the election, people were distracted. People also got distracted by 20 A legislation. Now it is harvesting its mistakes

    sokrates Monday, 02 November 2020 09:40 AM

Our great, gifted leader and his devoted adlatus Silva are working restlessly day and night to lead the country out of the crisis. They use their all-encompassing expert knowledge about the virus tirelessly and selflessly in order not to let the population suffer. All should be on their knees to thank our glorious and self-sacrificing Savior for his great salutary deeds. Hail Gota!

    Mifaz Monday, 02 November 2020 09:41 AM

Now don't you feel this regime is militarized?

    Prof Jey R Monday, 02 November 2020 09:42 AM

SLPP SJB ... 2 new Groups took control over Sri Lanka ... Kicking out PA and UNP !!! Plotting and using black money media to spread lies against good people !!! Now we all suffer !!! Mother nature is against everyone who went against Dharma !!! From China to Sri Lanka !!! Covid19 with Love ...

Don Dee Monday, 02 November 2020 09:43 AM

We as a people (regardless of political affiliations) supported this government in the first lockdown. Through great loss of business and hope, we thought we will do this for the country. What we achieved should have been safeguarded. Now all that sacrifice is a loss and we have to sacrifice and endure hardships again. Salaried employees and the monied can talk big but most of us who have to survive through operating a business are in the worst state possible. No support from anyone. This lock-down is unfair and impractical. Spread is too much.
