The Victoria Dam has been placed under close watch following a series of tremors felt in Kandy this year.

Minor tremors were felt in parts of Kandy in August, September and November this year.

The cause of the tremors have not yet been confirmed and officials said that inquiries are continuing.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told reporters yesterday that while the situation is not serious the authorities will remain vigilant.

"We are not prepared to take this lightly," he said.

The Minister said that steps are being taken to be prepared to face an eventuality if a more powerful tremor is felt in Kandy.

He said that an expert committee has studied the situation and advised continuous vigilance.

The Minister said that all stakeholders are involved in a joint programme to study the matter. (Easwaran Rutnam)

One small step for man .... Wednesday, 25 November 2020 02:34 PM

"steps are being taken to be prepared to face an eventuality" -- what steps ? - to me the only step is to release water from the dam with due caution not to flood downstream areas. God forbid, by the time the first step is taken it may be to late.
