A cabinet paper is to be presented to appoint more officials to Sri Lankan missions abroad in view to arrest the manpower shortages prevail in these missions, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Labour Manusha Nanayakkara told Parliament today.

The Minister came out with this information when Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP J. C. Alawathugoda raised the issue in the House.

“There is no one even to answer the phones in many Sri Lankans missions abroad as many of them have been ordered to return with the decision to downsize the workforce in the Sri Lankan foreign missions. Therefore we request the government to reverse its decision and to appoint staff in Sri Lankan missions overseas,” the MP said.

Some of those who were engaged in trafficking Sri Lankan women from Dubai to Oman have been arrested and operations are underway to apprehend others who are involved in it, Minister Nanayakkara told Parliament today. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Manusha is trying to reverse the decision earlier taken to down size the Embassies due to the existing financial crisis. He does not seem to care for waste but seems to have some catchers for foreign postings.

Manusha is utterly self serving. Ever since he became part of the UNP faction which left to become part of the SJB, the rot of that mad action has gone into his head, and now he is too much. Threatens woman going abroad by demanding they send money back the way he wants. Now with such limited amount of money wants to continue to increase costs. Lot of business use BPO, to have the reception being part of a team based overseas. Time for Sri Lankan internet connections to send overseas calls to be answered by people in Sri Lanka, a pool of phone answers for each of the embassies. A lot of Western Businesses now do their processing overseas, by sending all documents scanned to be processed overseas. Instead, the government just wants to send their over sized public service staff overseas unnecessarily.

These ministers have no foresight, when you guys promote accelerated foreign employment, you should prevent these crooks taking the advantage of innocent people. You guys are taking reactive actions as opposed to proactive actions. This is the weakness of our parliamentarians.

So you want to spend that hard earned dollars on your cronies and henchmen!! Huh!!

    Reformist Friday, 18 November 2022 12:54 PM

Well those arrested must be innocent scapegoats when the real culprits are at large due to their political connections. That is the wonder in Sri Lanka. Those comparing the legal system in Australia (cricketer case), compare that to SLanka handling these millions of cases involving corruption, mismanagement, human trafficking thuggery etc. Show me a single person who has been successfully prosecuted in your wonderland. You can wait until cows come home!

This is a ploy to give jobs to this mans cronies. We have no dollars to buy essentials And this man is trying to waste our money by giving jobs. Unless these two parties are completely chased out politics this system of governance can’t be changed.

The Ministers want children to be safe so the best place post them at the embassy where they will be also drawing fat salary this isthe norm

    Cherath Friday, 18 November 2022 03:39 PM

Lion - Too right! This indeed is a ploy to comfort his chums, at a time when the cry is to downsize the staff and expenditure overseas and everywhere. The hard working poor souls are gifted with more hardships daily while the privileged indulge no end.

    Rishan Friday, 18 November 2022 08:05 PM

Who pays the salary to them ? SL tax payees money ???

    maha Friday, 18 November 2022 08:59 PM

rather than additional staff, most of unproductive missions must be closed to save taxpayers money

    Razi Friday, 18 November 2022 10:57 PM

You don’t need to appoint staff in overseas missions just to answer calls. It is cheaper outsource this to centralised call centre in SL…

    GHT Friday, 18 November 2022 11:10 PM

All those changes should be coming into effect after people's mandate given through an ELECTION, up until then, no move regarding appointment should be made, if done so, they are OFFENSE.

Available immigration staff can be attached vto mission without further expenses

No one to answer the telephone is not a valid reason the increase the staff. Why can not they use emails to correspond?

    Ganesh M Saturday, 19 November 2022 04:16 PM

There are lot of staff in overseas missions who can’t speak good English. Result of racist Sinhala only policy in 1956. Shame on Sri Lankan governments.

whats your commission on every appointments Manusha? you or Harin are such a ironic, pathetic, unreliable politicians I have ever seen.

Nihal S. Samarasinha, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Germany Sunday, 20 November 2022 04:18 AM

Apart from all valid comments posted above, this attempt to load with staff is an absolute loss and again waist of foreign exchange of the country. The answer is to digitalizes the Missions and equip them with modern technology. This is a one time investment compared to sending staff from SL with all adhered cost of payroll, travel

No work in the ministry Sunday, 20 November 2022 07:46 AM

We are under the impression that Foreign embassies come under Minister of Foreign Affairs. But this man says, he will fill the vacancies in embassies. Is he trying to step into somebody else's shoes? It also shows he has no work as a minister. Let a state minister attend to the job!
