A test carried out by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has revealed that the new premium hybrid 18 litre gas cylinder introduced by the Litro Gas Lanka Ltd contains the same chemical properties of the old cylinder whereas the Company claimed that the newly-introduced cylinder was more efficient, CAA Executive Director Thushan Jayawardane said.
He said the Company had informed the CAA that the old cylinder weighing 12.5 kg had contained 80% Butane and 20% Propene and in the new cylinder was changed to 50 or 60% Butane and 40 or 50% Propene.
He said however, a test carried out by the Moratuwa University has revealed that the new cylinder also contains the same chemical properties of 50% Butane and 50% Propene just as in the old cylinder.
Mr. Jayawardane said the Company had misled the consumers by publishing advertisements and added that legal action would be taken against the Company for deceiving the consumers.
He said an email was sent asking the CAA Chairman to file a case against Litro Gas with a copy to the Attorney General.
He said it was deemed that legal action was delayed due to political influence.
He also said that the Company was given ample time to rectify the mistakes committed by them and added that the Company had failed to rectify any of those.(Vineetha M. Gamage)

I called CAA six times today, and spoke to someone different each time and different departments. I wanted to find out what a '12.5kg' gas cylinder should weigh, firstly when full, and secondly when empty. The first 5 people could not answer my question. The sixth person gave me the wrong information. Does anyone know?

Reply to J de Silva: The dead weight (the weight of the empty cylinder) is marked in white color in the cylinder. This weight varies from cylinder to cylinder, and hence there would not be fixed dead weight. However, weight of the cylinder at 'gas full' shall be calculated as follows: dead weight 12.5kg. Hope this clarifies your concerns.

Reply to J De Silva. Don't bother wasting your time. Probably all those who answered your calls have qualifications (from local universities) longer than their names. Must have been wondering why a consumer is asking all these technical details when the cylinder has been released after all SOP's have been complied. And in their lives shallow understanding- consumers need to just go and 'consume' what the so called educated people seem as 'fit for consumption'

The present cylinder perhaps has more high pressure air. It makes a hiss when lighting a cooker. This weight issue was present even in August 2020 last year and a consumer had written to the CAA, only to have the letter forwarded to Litro for action. Very good corrective measure and effective action by CAA.
