The most pressing issue our country currently confronts is the brain drain, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

He said highly skilled professionals such as doctors and engineers, as well as individuals who have benefited from free education, are now opting to leave the country in pursuit of higher salaries abroad.

However, it is unacceptable to exploit the benefits of free education and take advantage of everything offered in this country, only to bid farewell to our homeland in search of better opportunities elsewhere, minister Silva said.

Moreover, there are committed citizens employed in this sector who possess a genuine passion for their work and a strong dedication to serve our motherland, he added.

"As the Minister, I would like to seize this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to them," Minister de Silva concluded. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Peoples taxes pay for free education.. just like they pay for your luxury life and perks

    umas Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:02 PM

economic criminal issue is more important. nobody is punished yet

    Mahesh Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:13 PM

Most are fed up with current tax policy and how the government sector staff carry out work. Try to automate all possible services. For example several years many are waiting without the driving license card. This is a failurr of the department staff. Then take traffic violation capture process. You should automate it and make head cam compulsory for cops. Then for highway and bends in road you do not need to keep polcie cops iinstead you can have a cctv camera and save tax payers money too. So many things exista that need to bw updated. Also take our legal system and see the wastage of time in most cases. These needs to be changed.

This means your utter failure in politics...You did not know how to manage our Human resources and you did not know how to develop this country..why on earth people need to migrate from this country? Do you think people from Singapore or Malaysia might migrate in a save we see from our country..after all our country is a paradise on earth according to 15th century Traveller Ibn Batuta...And yet our ruelers in our time did not appreciate this nation and its natural beauty as this historic traveler did it . .why people in island have to migrate..why doctors ? Why academics ? Why teachers? Soon all our science teachers and maths teachers too will leave the country and many university academics have already left the country.. Thank you Mr Minister for tell about your failure in public ...I think we need some more cook politics to destroy the rest of Sri Lanka ...now one by one our natural resources and assets are being sold ..next generations will curse all of you and your souls.

Lots of educated like to serve the motherland. The politicians caused them to leave and you know who has to take the bulk of the blame. You have been a Cabinet Minister all the time except for a short break. So you too must take responsibility for the brain drain.

Mahendra Fernando Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:36 PM

What about dementia among Ministers? It is a pressing issue as well

    Professional Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:46 PM

Politicians, who brazenly steal public money, and even sleep even the parliament are stating the professionals, who achieved this status through their own hard work, that it's unacceptable to leave the country, after free education. Isn't it their responsibility to create conducive culture and work environment for such highly skilled professionals instead of blaming them.

Major brain drain is caused by the brain parasites in parliament Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:49 PM

Brain drain, brain drain, or some other nincompoop attention getting problem. Democratic elections forgotten and government looking at bring up little to no matter problems and making them out like crisis. The main brain drain in this nation is from the time wasting on the public caused by the 225 in parliament.

Gunadasa Kaggoda Saturday, 20 May 2023 03:59 PM

What about the wealth drain to private pockets by shameless windbags who make up legislative vacuum.

    Martin Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:03 PM

With you guys at the helm, only the like of Sarth Veerasekara, Gamapilla, and Wimal will only stay.

    sam Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:08 PM

Professionals should respect the free education and make it compulsory to serve the country for at least 10 years.

    Nimal Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:12 PM

Really? Haven't you seen thousands of unemployed graduates you produce from SL universities protesting in front of Fort Railway station demanding gvt jobs? Tell them not to leave the country. It is about time you fix the education system not to produce those useless university courses and instead concentrate on courses that students can jobs. Either you prepare them with right skills for global job markets or keep flooding the local universities with students doing useless courses that no employer wants. Then why are you sending people to Korea and Middle East? Btw, what skills have you got? Bribe seeking skills?

    M Fernando Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:14 PM

The man is right. The brains around the Diyawanna Oya have been drained a long time ago and are currently non-existent.

    R S Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:18 PM

The politicians are responsible for this situation. The situation will become even worse. It is the responsibility of the politicians to create an environment that is conducive for the people to remain in the country. It is incorrect to say that "it is unacceptable to exploit the benefits of free education and take advantage of everything offered in this country, only to bid farewell to our homeland in search of better opportunities elsewhere," as the conditions are such that they are forced to look for a better future for themselves and their children. The politicians continue to plunder the country, there is little or no respect for law and order, and there is rampant corruption in most state institutions. Those who want to make a change are suppressed, so what's the option?

    Lion Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:21 PM

The biggest issue is not the brain drain ,biggest issue here is the brain dead people like you are not allowing the people with brain to work.

    Dickus Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:22 PM

It is your malfunctioning brain that is a pressing issue.

kamba hora Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:26 PM

if you had a brain even the size of a mustard seed, certainly brain drain would not have happened in this country.

    Sunil Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:30 PM

Perfectly said we cannot get free education using our tax payers money and then serving foreign masters. But when governance is poor standards have dropped corruption is unchecked power lies with a closed circle economic outlook is poor then only option is to migrate for better prospects

Ranjit Kapuge Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:36 PM

Very likely some restrictions will be imposed in the near future to curb this recent exodus of Srilankans.

    Cherath Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:55 PM

If the Ministers and other top politicians stop stealing from public funds, add superficial values to development work because of the % commissions they force upon the provider/contractor, the funds thus saved could be utilised for our workers for their betterment. They will then stop seeking pastures elsewhere. You should know. Remember the Japanese govt. Airport venture ?

    Terrence K Saturday, 20 May 2023 04:55 PM

Mr Minister now only u have felt the brain drain is a pressing problem. Did you give ear to the many cries of these professionals who were requesting for the government to review the many decisions taken by the government which drastically brought down their living standards whilst you parliamentarians talk bulshit in parliament with many infighting between all of you which does not add anything to the growth of this country and paid hefty monthly payments in many perks etc. What I feel is that we need to change this system by applying a basic qualification and accordingly be paid a monthly stipend which cannot exceed the salaries or perks of a government servant with definitely a BIG NO to pension.

    sss Saturday, 20 May 2023 05:05 PM

What do these brains do? After more than 100 years of higher education sri lanka economy is still a subsistence economy depending on blue collar workers like housemaids working abroad. The educated and the politicians who hold the power together are responsible for this sad state of affairs'

Justin Dodampahala Saturday, 20 May 2023 05:12 PM

Demand some bribes and become SL next PM!!

Mike Revere Saturday, 20 May 2023 05:13 PM

This happened after JVP insurrecton of 1971 and tough treatment of professionals by madam's government. Then JRJ when voted in gave room for professionals to go abroad and most came back and served and reversed the fleeing.

    Unt Saturday, 20 May 2023 05:29 PM

You politicians created a bad atmosphere, corruption and unpleasant environment. I am sure many of these guys don't want to leave this paradise island for reason other than you greedy politicians and their goons and racists

    lester Saturday, 20 May 2023 06:13 PM

We have the same population of Australia in this small island. People going abroad is a good thing.

    Drainbrain Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:14 PM

De Silva acknowledges that there are greater chances for educated professionals outside of Sri Lanka with this remark, but at the same time, De Silva, like politicians in Sri Lanka, DRAIN the BRAINS by stealing public funds and engaging in CORRUPTION.

    Wije Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:19 PM

Obvious, educated honest people will not ready to serve under rouge leadership

Nimal Corrupt Politician Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:21 PM

Yes, De Silva is quite right in his statement, educated people are crossing the border, but corrupt politicians such as De Silva are crossing the parties in between to continue CORRUPTION in the parliament.

Sam Silva Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:29 PM

For Politicians there is no brain drain because they do not have one

    Nihal S Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:46 PM

Corrupted politicians like you are responsible for this situation. Those people who leave the country at least do not steal public money on top of the free education they received. But the corrupted politicians steal public money, obtain bribes from the development partners and ruin our country.

Ilankai Venthan Saturday, 20 May 2023 07:59 PM

Sir, Your children are overseas and you live a luxury life in Sri Lanka .... why do you care...... we understand you have to say these things to show your existence. don't worry Sir we will survive ,,,,,,until a new leaders come in few years...

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 20 May 2023 08:03 PM

That is mainly because the brainless thugs like you are ruling the country and robbing all the money

    Bertram Saturday, 20 May 2023 08:04 PM

You are the present aviation minister. Improve tourism by extending the runway of Jaffna International Airport.

    Maheepala Saturday, 20 May 2023 08:41 PM

You are responsible for same ? Don’t you?

Kumar Soysa Saturday, 20 May 2023 09:00 PM

But you are free to exit. Take the rest with you!!

    Gamini Saturday, 20 May 2023 11:34 PM

You talk of tax payer funded free education. How many politicians pay any tax but enjoy the best luxuries of life without paying taxes or doing any useful work. You are a prime example

    Zaza Sunday, 21 May 2023 12:23 AM

I know, you know, we know the truth. The only way out of this is nothing but a system change. Let the Nation Busting Presidential System go and with it the mind-boggling Electoral System. Give a chance to the Youth clamoring for a Change.

Pradeep Carvalho Sunday, 21 May 2023 06:01 AM

Exactly! Spot on Minister. You were born brain less so ya brain drained !

Here I promise you! Sunday, 21 May 2023 06:01 AM

If I have the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits and perks you politicians have, I will never, ever leave this paradise Island. I promise you!

    Xingo Sunday, 21 May 2023 06:03 AM

Why don't the people get rid of the old crook politicians.. does the country need a jumbo cabinet , a 225 member parliament ? what has the politicians done ?

Rajiv Selvam Sunday, 21 May 2023 06:08 AM

Look who is talking about the brain drain, this guy doesn’t have a brain in the first place to talk about the brain drain. His brain works only when it comes to asking for bribes. What a pinching moron this guy is.

    Punchi Sunday, 21 May 2023 07:23 AM

Sri Lankan brain is most valuable in the world because it is hardly used when compared to Indian or very much used Japanese brain

    Mahadenamuththa Sunday, 21 May 2023 07:52 AM

Honourable Minister is dam right. Most of the brainy people have left the country and others with brains do not want to be involved in politics. So we can't find even 30 good brains to fill cabinet positions and have to settle with guys like NSS and other idiots.

Demuni de Silva Sunday, 21 May 2023 07:59 AM

Mr. Minister, Ranil Wickramasinghe along with you all are accountable for this turmoil or disorder in the country !

    H.L. Saman Sunday, 21 May 2023 08:47 AM

Young people leave country as suitable jobs not available. Ex. Electronic engineers . Country is to be developed to create jobs but our leaders want to earn money only and no idea of developing. Poor voters vote and waiting leaders initiate development programmes

    Jude Sunday, 21 May 2023 10:12 AM

Worse than that is Brainless Politicians, yeah.

    D.W.Samaratunga Monday, 22 May 2023 02:47 AM

Root cause is the opportunistic politicians of your caliber

    Punchi Monday, 22 May 2023 05:09 AM

The most intelligent developed by religious training brains in our paradise are Buddhist monks. 20 normal brains don’t make even one ordinary monk brain so our paradise wihich has an abundance of monks also has an abundance of brains so we can export some.

    Fred Monday, 22 May 2023 09:57 AM

Best way to stop the brain drain start listening to the brains left in the country(educated people)

    Bibs Monday, 22 May 2023 12:12 PM
