The authorities have raised serious concern over people's carefree attitude in the aftermath of the lifting of curfew in the country.

State Minister Channa Jayasumana said the people are seen gathering in large numbers in places of worship and other places.

He told the media today that Sri Lanka is still not out of the woods as yet in terms of the COVID-19 situation.

The State Minister said people seem to be taking things for granted and enjoying themselves without realising the imminent danger.

“That's the very reason why the travel restriction has been extended. However, people are seen behaving as if the pandemic is over; but it is not,” he pointed out.

“This pandemic has dragged on for such a long time. If we are to put an end to this, we should act more responsibly, especially in a situation where measures like curfew are not in effect,” he added.

Thus, Minister Jayasumana invited people to leave no stone unturned in the race against the pandemic so that everyone would be able to see a silver lining of the dark cloud formed by COVID-19. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Although you mention places of worship and other places, you are aiming at the protestors and do not want to mentions it. What the government really want to keep the people off protest. Looking at what is happening in other parts of the world where majority of people are vaccinated life is almost normal. I think you are more worried of the efficacy of the major vaccine used in Sri Lanka.

What is the point in opening up and not having strict basic rules - social distancing, limits on numbers during public and private gatherings, hand sanitation etc etc. The authorities want people to think it is now safe to carry on regardless.

Relocate the Government Departments in other areas to reduce the crowds coming to Colombo. Take over part of Horagolla for this purpose and construct buildings.

Govt cannot blame people. It's them who should put effective rules, contact tracing, and mechanisms. There are millions of ways to ensure safety when re-opening the country. Countries like Singapore they do that and the govt don't blame the people. This Govt trying to put their failures on people.

Why always put the blame on people. Are the authorities behaving good? They have put people into misery in every respect. People are not bothered whether they get covid or not, because suffering from poverty has come to the hilt.

Jayasiri Deshabandu Monday, 11 October 2021 09:36 AM

Authorities should be more functional to enact the law and punish those who violate the law. People in general do not follow the rules. Authorities must make sure the law is applied. For example if a person is not wearing a mouth cover, he should be punished with a fine. It is impossible to arrest a large number of people not wearing mask but it is easy to find them on the spot. Taking them to court adds a lot of work for personnel in the law system!
