The brain drain has increased decisively due to the current economic crisis in the country, and at least 10,000 of the cream of ICT engineers have migrated since the crisis started, Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) President Damith Hettihewa said.

He told the Daily Mirror that due to emigration, the country would lose the cream of ICT talents, which can help grow the economy.

“The majority of migrations occurred as a result of the high demand for IT engineers worldwide as a result of the fourth industrial revolution, the digital revolution, which was followed by rapid post-colonial migration in all countries,” he said.

“The IT sector in the country is a powerful solution for the current economic situation in the country, and the brain drain has affected it mainly,” Hettihewa said.

"It is estimated that between 20% and 25% of IT-related personnel left our companies to work for other companies that met their economic needs," he said.

"Even before the COVID pandemic, our industry required 20,000 fresh IT professionals per year. However, only 9,000 people joined us in holding hands. About 1000 persons came from Government institutions, and the remaining persons came from private universities. "There was a 50 per cent loss in supplying IT-related personnel to the industry," he said.

"The CSSL set an export target of USD 3 billion by 2024. We could reach $1 billion in 2021. Migration and a lack of IT professionals have affected our target," Hettihewa said. (Chaturnaga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Let all professionals migrate Sri lanka and a community of aliens will come down to this island or we will hand over this island to its native inhabitants...Vedda of this country...they will rule it better than what Ranil and Sajith try to do ..they will at least protect this country from all ecological disasters and life will be simple and no need to have foreign currencies...we all will go back to basic and lead a life of Vedda ... Healthy and organic life style .. If politicians of this country can't make a meaningful life to the people of country Vidda rule would be better..

They have not migrated permanently. Migrating to a developed country is not a easy thing. They may have gone for foreign employment. It is better for the country as they will remit their income. People who permanently migrated won't send thier salaries to Sri Lanka. Instead they sell their property and convert the sales income to foreign currency by robing other's hard earn foreign income and send the money abroad.

The question is NOT why they migrate, rather why don't they. Anyone watching a little bit of COPE inquiries etc would realise how incompetent and corrupt SL politicians and public servants are. Anyone who have migrated to a developed country already would know what a great decision it was. SL wonderland is for corrupt politicians and public servants, not for true professionals.

The austerity measures, proposed by IMF believed to be focussed on repairing bring twin deficit to surplus. If professionals in large numbers leave the business will affect and will be a negative loop back. I don't think professionals wait in anticipation of economy recovery when plenty of opportunities around the world. The measures taken to protect most vulnerable are barely sufficient, therefore it will be ineffective. If SL had gone to IMF at least an year before then the results would have been different. Need to blame the government and the Governors os CBSL

Are they going to be cheap low cost replacements for the staff being laid off by Amazon, Facebook, Twitter etc. I also wonder how our Sinhala superior beings will take to working under indian team leaders in many companies that is if they end up working in IT and not as security guards and washing dishes

They will experience mild forms of discrimination but not to the extent of the entrenched superiority complex in our action towards our minorities seen in our beggar failed fictional Buddha thrice visited and blessed paradise
