The Embarkation Tax, levied at Points of Entry of the country has been amended by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, the CAASL said.

“Passengers who leave Sri Lanka via Ratmalana International Airport and Jaffna International Airport will have to pay an Embarkation Tax of USD 30.

The tax has been reduced to USD 30 from the earlier uniform fee of USD 60 which was applicable to all points of entry.

The tax remains unchanged at USD 60 at the Bandaranaike International Airport, and at sea ports.

Meanwhile, international airlines that depart from Mattala Mahinda Rajapaksa Airport are exempted from being charged this tax for two years from the date of commencement of operations.

The CAASL said that the Authority had exempted Mattala to promote the airport.  (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Embarkation levy to promote tourism as well as Independence Day celebrations. Many backpackers won't have $60 left when they leave the country, which is bound to cause trouble. Tourist families with 2 children will curse Sri Lanka upon departure and swear never to come again.

It’s indirect tax for overseas workers instead of giving any benefits

    A Surber Thursday, 19 January 2023 09:40 AM

Crazy idea! First too high visa fee and when leaving embarkation levy. You do everything to keep tourists away. I have been a regular visitor of Sri Lanka since 1981! and have spent a lot of money here. But I am NOT A CASH COW ! In the future I spend my money in a country where I feel welcome.

    Perera Thursday, 19 January 2023 09:57 AM

New embarkation tax will be among the highest in the world!

Elisabeth Norheim Thursday, 19 January 2023 10:33 AM

This is beyond crazy. I have travelled 40 countries and never paid to leave. Tourists will tell Sri Lanka to f off.

Normally these charges are levied into the air tickets not collected at some cash point at the airport. That’s like going back to the 1990s. How will they collect from tickets already issued? Plus the article refers to March 2022?!?! This country offers NO value to tourists compared to Bali, Thailand, Cambodia. Tourists can’t be the cash cow to rescue decades of internal governance problems and corruption.

Also rich tourists do not like to get ripped off.How can a family afford this? I mean Sri Lankan families and tourists.

Now the latest is that bankrupt Sri Lankan airlines departing from BIA is carrying extra fuel ( this is called tankering fuel for the return journey) thus they are not loading about half the checked passenger baggage. This done in a selected crude profiling by selecting Sri Lankan nationals working abroad and holding their baggage and delivering them when ever they find it convenient to them . Delay is one to two weeks and they do not compensate the passengers this inconvenienced. This is out of greed as they get the fuel free in Sri Lanka out of the Sri Lankan tax payers .
