Discussions are in progress with British Council and other international academic institutions to get their assistance to implement the activity-based oral English for grade one students from the first term starting from March next year, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today.
He told Parliament that 13,000 teachers who are teaching for grade one students would be trained within the next three months.
The Minister said preparing of the work book has already commenced.
He said focus has been drawn to extend this program to pre-schools as well and added that the task was handed over to the Child and Women Affairs Ministry.
The Minister said the Education Ministry would provide necessary assistance to implement that program to pre-schools as well. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Really very good decision. Switch over to english medium for all the schools. There is no need to translate english textbooks to Sinhala and introducing bizarre terms in Sinhala for well understood easy to remember english words.

Reverting to English medium from the early years of a child is a very good move. Because of vernacular education introduced in the fifties, more than four generations lost the opportunity to study in the English medium, and a vast number of them are now frogs in the 'Swabhasha' well! Hope no idiots will object to this move initiated by the education minister.

Well done minister. Congratulations. It’s SWRD who ruined this country and converted into a racist colony. We must give equal status to all. It is best to have two states in one country to have loving neighbours like India, USA.

So now our people who complain of British and European colonisation which actually benefited our country in providing a better life style and many institutions that we have successfully corrupted, enfeebled or destroyed have finally decided the importance of teaching English the language of our benevolent colonial masters

This is a good initiative but do we have good enough teachers to do this .. recruit new teachers of English..expand their numbers both in primary and secondary education.. without that there is no way to do this

We were a country that exported English Teachers to Maldives, Malaysia, Singapore etc... Today, we do not have English Teachers, that is the extent of damage done by Southern Yakkos.

Reply to Punchi : although the Dutch and Brits were at war with eachother in the 17th and 18th Century , the Dutch have to learn English too. I am glad, because the Dutch language is useless internationally.

Seek help from American Council rather than begging on British Council which is considered primitive style of practical English which is irrelevant to the Digital world.
Good, but not good Saturday, 26 November 2022 07:32 AM
Good, but not good. Handing over the subject to the wrong ministry of Women and Child Affair is not good! Please don't follow the Indian brand of English. "I came home." මම ගෙදර ආවෙමි. You came home. ඔබ ගෙදර ආවේය. This is chorus teaching" I saw in a tuition class of oral English. If this is to continue, please think again.
