A ship carrying 41,876 metric tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MoP) fertilizer is scheduled to sail into the port of Colombo on December 2 from Canada, the Agriculture Ministry said.
Subject minister Mahinda Amaraweera, said the consignment was procured with a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
MoP is to be applied between four and six weeks after sowing or planting paddy.
Therefore, the farmers in the country will be given the opportunity to use MoP for cultivation at the appropriate time.
The volume of fertilizer recommended by the Agriculture Department for one hectare is 60kg. It can be applied in two segments - 25 and 35kg, the minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

It looks as if all foreign aid and our forex is diverted to only Paddy and Tea! Other crops too require MOP ! Perhaps the ministers must be made aware if they do not know! Do they advocate to use Organic stuff for other crops, but use the forex earned through them to subsidize or distribute free for only favourite and votes related crops! This kind of practice resulted in a well connected minister hoarding 400 bags of urea and another current state minister hoarding 300 odd bags in Kegalle area. What happened to these detections! Nothing as usual while growers of other crops have to depend on animal and bird dung!
