Two Lankan maids killed

Two Sri Lankan maids have met with tragic deaths in the Middle East, one in a suicide and the other in a roadside accident, officials at the Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) told Daily Mirror online.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online officials from the FEB stated that the maid who committed suicide was in her late 30’s and from Horowpathana. They added that the cause for suicide had been depression due to missing her mother’s funeral.

Meanwhile another maid employed in Lebanon who had been knocked down in a road accident last week succumbed to her injuries yesterday. The victim, who was in her 20’s and from Matara, had been run over by a vehicle, in which two young boys had been traveling, both of whom are now in custody. (Daily Mirror online)

REALLY, what is the reason for these maids being forced to pay the FEB a premium before departure ???

+ This is not the first time and surely will not be the last. They must decide whether to stay in the country and live in poverty or get killed like this. AFAIK, Ranjan Ramanayaka is the only one who tried to do something for these unfortunates.

Govt should stop or discourage people going out of S.L. to do labour jobs. There is a labour shortage in S.L. why is govt encouraging our people to do foriegn jobs?? Our people also dont want to work hard in S.L. instead they want to go abroad thinking they will get gold but finally only suffering.

In addition, there is plenty, plenty, plenty etc...of small business opportunities in S.L. Why are sri lankans not utilising it. they always want to do odd jobs for white man or gulf people.

Where oh where is the leader who will rise and lead my beautiful SL to an economic standard where our poor don't have to travel to a strange land and hire themselves out as menial servants anymore? We come from a civilization that goes back a few thousand years and yet are now called "third world". Sad.
