Several areas in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara have been flooded as a result of the heavy rain experienced since early this morning.

The Mathugama-Aluthgama road and Jawatta road are among the roads inundated this morning, the Disaster Management Centre said.

Fort and Slave Island too have come under water and a tree has been uprooted near the Gangaramaya Temple desrupting traffic. The tree had fallen on two vehicles which were damaged. (YP)

Well, building on wetlands wouldn't affect flooding as long as there is a strong drainage system in place. Most of the solid drainage systems in place were put there by either the British or thereafter the UNP. Some of these have been destroyed by the STL due to bad positioning of Telephone rosset boxes blocking these drainage lines.

Colombo Municipal Council should be held totally responsible for flooding in Colombo. CMC has so far failed to identify the locations where water gets accumulated on the roads in Colombo. After having identified large gullies or manholes could be constructed and water could be get drained into underground storm water system, that has been built by the British. This special commissioner has totally neglected and failed even to clean up existing gullies. Storm water system built by the British is still capable of carrying storm water. I have decided to file Fundamental Rights action against the CMC and the Special Administrator Omar Kameel Those who are interested can join in the litigation against the CMC and MR. Kameel.

I cannot see an end to these floods each time we have a downpour, as long as the derelict drainage system remains unimproved. Residents concreting over their gardens for easy maintenance hasn't helped either.

Many people seem to be woefully lacking the capacity to focus on the issue at hand, going by the majority of comments. Whatever the subject, they somehow find a way to bring in the government and its leaders! It may, of course be entertainment, but is it rational to do so?

Let’s enjoy this weather. Isn't it cool to see the roads going under water, to see some people suffer? The kids love rain, they can play in the rain, stay at home when their houses and roads are under water. They can even have a rain holiday. They will never forget these experiences. And if you are newly married you know the value of this weather especially after a long period of humid nights and days. The way things are happening in the world we might very soon have no rain at all. So merry so long you have it.

These issues are not priorities for the ruling politicians. They know that people shout during floods and forget after floods subsided. They have already attended to the first priority which is duty free cars. The change has to come from the top. It is not happening and does not seem to be happening.

I suppose even the filling up of the muthurajawela sanctuary which is being done right now is done by the opposition UNP.Mind you they are filling 600 acres of this precious wetland..

I seriously hope that the takeover of the Urban Dev Authority by Gota would be able to put some solid plans to make colombo a more efficient city. I doubt he will though.

The Greater Colombo Wastewater Management programme should be expedited to counter this. Many people were not able to get to work this morning due to the floods. The Govt shouldn't sit on the project.

Thank god we dont have volcanos in Sri Lanka. Otherwise the anti Sri Lankans will blame the government for each erruption. I think the US roads never get flooded.

Housing schemes also needed. These people who do washing,can't understand the value. No proper drainage systems developed for last 10 years; drowning concrete layers.
Concrete is not everything, not responsible for land reclamation recently thanks to the FM portfolio generously granted.

Now The Government is Spending millions of Rupees for The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) in colombo for the month of June, just for a day of matter to get populer.

Colombo Mayor Omar Kamil said last week in the news paper, he need around 50 million
to make colombo city beautiful just for the one day program.

But I dont know why the current Government is blind, never think about the flooded area's in colombo and surburb.

People have forgotten who is responsible for turning wet-lands to new housing schemes. Even the world recognised Attidiya wet land was sold to developers. People ignorant of the activities of former UNP regimes blame current rulers.

This is a very long outstanding work should have been completed by WSDB. If rain continues for 3 days, the whole of colombo will be underwater and every operation will come to a standstill.
