An Indian businessman identified as M. Maniyam Hariraj working in Chilaw has been abducted and assaulted allegedly by the Chairman of the Arachikatuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Jagath Samantha over a personal dispute. He is now receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. A police complaint has been lodged over the incident.
It is alleged that a crisis surfaced when the daily paid employees working in the BOI factory run by the Indian businessman were placed on contract basis with effect from June 1.
The employees protested against this move and met the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Jagath Samantha and requested him to intervene. The Chairman met the factory management to discuss the issue on June 2.
Meanwhile the employees staged a walkout until the issue was settled causing the management to close the factory.
However when the owner of the factory returned from India on June 8 to reopen the factory, the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, with several others, is alleged to have abducted and assaulted the Indian national.
He lodged a complaint with Chilaw police and informed the incident to a prominent cabinet minister. It is understood that the minister had instructed Chilaw police to hold a formal inquiry into the complaint. (Daily Mirror online)
