Several roads in Colombo have been submerged as a result of the heavy rain today. The roads include Barney Raymond road, the Ibbangala junction and the Library roundabout, police media spokesman Preshantha Jayakody said. (SD)

The main cause of the floods is overcrowding. Colombo city is overcrowded in dwelling where any authority can not seek a permanent solution. All shanty dwellers should be chased away for other provinces. Other wise these shanty dwellers will continue to pollute the city and bllock draning of water by unauthorised structures and unnecesary land filling etc. More over these prople's life style is very very corupted and bcome a social menance.

very true...CMC should take some blame..but in a heavy downpour as this nothing much could be done..we too should take the blame because most that blocks the drainage is waste and polythene that we just throw on the streets..we don't mind where we dump our waste as long as it's not in our premises....naturally all end up in the drainage..
on the daily mirror main page is an interesting picture of a policeman cleaning a gully..i'm not sure whether it is the same officer ..but i too saw a similar site on nawam mawatha today...so unfortunate i didn't have a camera..and guess what he pulled out..?a polythene that we cal l' lunch sheet'....!

When can we see a city like Singapore in Colombo with proper town planning and infrastructure system.There are dutch built canals,lakes in the heart of the city but the drains and gullies are choked.Who is responsible.It is pathetic to see that the countries President had to intervene in all headaches.What is CMC,NWSDB,SLLRDC,RDA,UDA doing?

i think the CMC and the citizens of the country should take the blame for this situ. Citizens of this country should also not be throwing garbage on the road which eventually blocks the drainage sytem. CMC please take steps to collect garbage and also clean the raods/drains on a regular basis . If you dont collect garbage on a regular basis where can the residents keep the garbage. this is a recurring issue and some sort of long term solution should be found for this flooding. its pathetic to note that the city getting flooded on a yearly basis with the sleeping CMC on the job. Hemantha has rightly mentioned about CMC's great job.

We usually want to blame the others. As you have rightly pointed out, we are also responsible. But the GOSL seems to be the 'scape goat ' for most our citizens.

Kieth - that is only part of the problem. The main one is the unplanned development due political exigencies, and getting away with anything by political patronage. Politics have been our ruination. not only Colombo but all Sri Lanka. The Engineers, Doctors and Adminstrators have no say as polticians try to run everything including even cricket..

FIrst look within. How many of us 'citizens' are guilty of disposing plastic, etc that end up blocking the drainage systems. How many new constructions have ignored proper drainage planning in getting plans passed? How many are responsible for constructions on less high profile but equally damaging eco sites without a thought for natural water collection? First seek to cure what is within. Action not talk is what is required!

The UDA is capable for demolishing houses and not to implement a proper drainage system within the Colombo city and its suburbs. The poor people are without the shelter after demolishing the houses amidst these heavy rains.

whenever it rains in Colombo this happens..and it is the same story over the past years...how sad nothing has been done about the drainage system in Colombo...irrespective of the party in power...please do something about it ..as this leads to the outbreak of many diseases

Rana, Since British left the island in 1948, No more drainage system developments. All that happened was ministers and top end Civil servernts looted the wealth for their own benifit and now you are reaping what you sow

This is, indeed, saddening. Much of this flooding could have been avoided if authorities had taken steps to clear the clogged drainage systems and canals in the City of Colombo. Over to Gota, Secretary of Defense, for some quick action, as Head of the UDA.
