A large number of caterpillars have emerged in parts of Puttalam, damaging plants and invading homes, causing skin rashes to people who come in contact with the insects, area residents said.
According to residents, thousands of caterpillars have emerged since last morning in Senakudirupu in Puttalam forcing people in the area to burn coconut husks around their homes in order to prevent the caterpillars from entering the houses.
Health inspectors had been called in to assist the residents by spraying chemicals on the insects but the numbers do not seem to be reducing, residents in the area told Daily Mirror online this morning.
The unusual activity comes just weeks after a large number of frogs began to appear and enter houses in parts of Moratuwa. (Daily Mirror online)
