Attempts to mislead cops

There are moves to mislead the police by claiming that there was violence in some places and investigations to nab these rumour mongers are underway, DIG Elections, Gamini Navaratne told Daily Mirror online.

The DIG said that since polling began early this morning, they had received reports that some individuals had been lodging complaints claiming that violence had struck some areas only to alert the security ‘unnecessarily’.

“So far everything is peaceful. We have not received any complaints of violence. However investigations are underway to identify these rumour mongers,” DIG Navaratne said.

A total of 81,000 military personnel have been deployed islandwide to maintain security while voters cast their votes today, the DIG added. (JN)
