Colombo, October 1 (Daily Mirror) - Officials of the Weligama Municipal Council refrained from performing their duties, claiming that Deputy Chairman Arindra Sanath Kumara had threatened the Municipal Council Accountant, a senior official said.
The dispute reportedly arose after an employee applied for a personal loan. According to sources, Deputy Chairman Kumara, representing the Independent Group, allegedly demanded that Municipal Council Accountant Nuwan Ude Kumara urgently provide the funds. The accountant subsequently lodged a complaint with the Weligama Police.
During the protest, the accountant and other officials remained at the entrance of the council, insisting on a fair resolution and urging that politicians should not interfere with or threaten the duties of council staff.
Mayor Afraz Mohamed, representing the National People’s Power, was attending a special programme in Galle when he was informed of the situation. He immediately returned to the council, held discussions with the officials and took steps to end the protest.
