Mr. Y.A.G.K. Gunathilake, Western province Director of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) yesterday (25) said it was planned to erect a cycling track connecting the Battaramulla Diyatha Uyana and the entrance to the Colombo Port City.
According to a statement issued by the Government Information Department, the project is to be completed by 2021.
The project would create a safe environment for cyclists especially school children, employed people, local and foreign tourists and those who engaged in cycling as a sport.
Through the 23km long track of width between 1.5m – 2.5m, it is expected to reduce traffic congestion by minimising the number of vehicles entering the main roads and to promote an eco-friendly transport medium.
Under the first phase of the project, people could enter the cycling track through any one of 11 entrance points where one could rent a bicycle. The rented bicycle could be returned to any one of the 11 entrances.
In addition, they plan to install lights to illuminate the pathway at times of lower light intensities in accordance with international standards. (Thisari Walawege)
