Three soldiers from Mutthiyankattu Army Camp remanded over alleged murder

Colombo, August 11 (Daily Mirror) - A sergeant and two corporals attached to the 12 Sinha Regiment camp at Mutthiyankattu in the Mullaitivu Army Camp, who had been taken in connection with the death of a young man who called over at the Mutthiyankattu Army Camp to collect scrap iron, were produced before Mullaitivu Magistrate Dharmalingam Pradeepan and remanded till August 19.

The body of the victim, Adiramansinham Kapilraj, had been recovered from the tank by the police.

It is alleged that the young man had been assaulted when he called over at the army camp with two others to purchase scrap iron, and later drowned in the Mutthiyankattu tank.

Police told court that they suspect the young man may have jumped into the tank to escape the suspects who assaulted him, accusing him of unauthorized entry into the camp, which is to be disbanded. They stated that the young man, who had been informed to clear the junk from the camp premises, was assaulted when he called over at the camp with two others.

The three military personnel arrested and remanded were Sgt. Deviranlage Chanaka Sampath Saman Kumara, Corporals Namal Kumarasiri Wanigaratne, and Jayasinghe Peliyagedara Lasantha Chandrasiri.

A tense atmosphere prevailed when the residents of the area gathered at the scene and staged a protest against the incident when the body was recovered. However, they dispersed after senior police officials promised to hold a formal investigation into the incident and take action against the three military personnel.

Oddusudan police are conducting further investigations.
