Sri Lanka Cricket presented a Rs. 5 million donation to Sri Lanka's legendary cheerleader, Percy Abeysekera, to support his well-being and maintenance of good health.
The decision was taken by the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, headed by the President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Shammi Silva.
"Percy's contribution to the game of cricket in Sri Lanka as a cheerleader is immeasurable, and he has been a tower of strength for the players and to the game as a whole. It was our turn to give back and look into his well-being," Mohan de Silva said.
The donation was handed over to Mr. Abeysekera by Mohan De Silva when he visited Percy’s house on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket to inquire about his health and well-being, the SLC said.

Money should be used to develop school age children cricket not wasted away Monday, 18 September 2023 04:12 PM
No wonder our cricket team is lost so badly at home in the at the Asia Cup recently. Complete lack of focus by SLC to use of public money to donate to supporters in this way. Especially when there is so much hunger and other unnecessary suffering amoungst children, many of whom are interested in cricket too. The money should be used for either food for the needy, or for developing cricket of school children. The giving away money of 5 million to the individual is too much. Government must bring in financial legislation to curtail SLC outrageous behaviour.

Excellent gesture of goodwill. Percy deserves every cent of it.

Ya it's good, but what is going to tell SLC about last match, need to give punishment for players..
Forgetting the game, and throwing money away on rich fans Tuesday, 19 September 2023 09:09 AM
Last match is again sign of misguided or bad SLC approach. Just like throwing away 5 million on a well off, well living cricket fan. There is no need to punish the workers, the ones who deliver, and rather than approach really punishes greater Sri Lanka cricket fans, who will be around long after this Percy is gone in his expensive house.

A very good deed sans politics for our cheer leader who cheered all teams for over 5 decades

The only good deed SLC has done?
What a ruse Monday, 18 September 2023 07:01 PM
Looted money given away in abundance as of their money according to their whims

Despite several reasonable criticism on SLC, extending the helping arm to Percy is most welcome.

He deserves much more. However, it is gracious of the Board to recognize this individual who spent the best days of his life cheering and supporting the team. Hope these funda are not received from the BCCI after ASIA cup fiasco.

What a waste. SLC should know that there are many past old cricketers in there 80s and 90s who are in need of urgent money unlike this man. And looking at the picture it doesn't look as if he's in need of urgent money.

Percy is living with furniture house better than most out of Colombo fans Tuesday, 19 September 2023 09:07 AM
Percy always had money. How else could someone follow cricket for so much time? The furniture in the house shows he is not in the least poor. He does not need another 5 million, which instead should have gone to those in the country with greater need. People who suffer so much they can't lavish the time Percy can afford on cricket.

The cricket memorabilia Mr. Percy owns could be worth over 10 million. This is like watering your garden on rainy days.
Sue Kirthisinghe Tuesday, 19 September 2023 10:09 AM
Whoever you are, you posting rude and anonymous comments about Percey; either doesn't know Percy's contribution to cricket or you're one of those sad and disgruntled people who doesn't want anyone to be rewarded for good deeds. Furthermore, posting various silly comments anonymously shows your mentality and what a coward you are not even to use your own name in a post. Get a life man. Percy deserves it and Sri Lanka Cricket can definitely afford it.
Anuradapura Attha Tuesday, 19 September 2023 08:57 PM
Sri Lanka can afford it? Are you mad. Are you part of SLC? Whatever the jealous fellow is saying, Percy won't care. Why don't you write to the Minister and say you are proud that 5 million SLC given to Percy and see what happens. SLC is corrupt and crooked, and everything they do is bad.

He is PRICELESS. Much much more well over $5b or even $5t. All the best Sir.
